Biography
Caustic industrial edged "Cyber-Grind" Death Metal out of Melbourne, Victoria fronted by the originally anonymous 'The Berzerker' (a.k.a. Luke Kenny). THE BERZERKER came into being during 1995, issuing an array of EP releases across the globe on labels such as 'Inextricable Zenith' on Speedcore in Germany, Widerstand in Austria and Industrial Strength in North America. In 1998 a triptych of MORBID ANGEL remixes, 'Day Of Suffering', 'Abominations' and 'The Ancient Ones', secured a recording contract with the Earache label.
It was announced that THE BERZERKER's opening album was to be recorded at Devin Townsend's studio in Vancouver utilising a slew of guest artists. However, this did not transpire and the sessions were laid down in Melbourne with guitarist Ed Lacey and drummer Jason Lacey, both from THE WOLVES, plus bassist Sam Bean.
Controversy was on the agenda from the word go as 'The Berzerker' album came under fire from governing television bodies in the UK, banning the promotional short for the track 'Reality' due to "excessive strobe lighting and horrific images". Undaunted THE BERZERKER set of an extensive North American tour throughout early 2001 billed as the 'Crush The Opposition' tour in league with DYING FETUS, SKINLESS and GORGUTS. For these shows the band members, remaining anonymous, wore suitably frightening masks to hide their identities. The musicians would in fact be ABRAMELIN and STEEL AFFLICTION guitarist Matt Wilcock, bassist Mark Palfreyman and ALARUM drummer Matt Racovalis.
In support of a second album 'Dissimulate', which saw drums supplied by Gary Thomas from Perth Death Metal combo PLAGUE, THE BERZERKER would undertake headline shows in Australia in October 2002 supported by ABRAMELIN. Into November the band hooked up with a package billing comprising VADER, IMMOLATION and ORIGIN for gigs across the USA. British shows saw a batch of shows in December supported by LABRAT, RED HARVEST and INSISION. Gigs in North America for January and February of 2003 had the band in alliance with an impressive extreme Metal cast of NILE, NAPALM DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and DARK TRANQUILITY.
The group released their debut DVD, 'The Principles And Practices Of The Berzerker' in March 2004. A new album, 'World Of Lies', would be set for September 2005. The following year bassist Sam Bean activated solo Death Metal project THE SENSELESS.
THE BERZERKER toured the UK once more in March 2006, supported by HAPPY FACE, MADMAN IS ABSOLUTE and York's RSJ. Earache Records released 'Animosity' in 2007. In October that year the group headlined the 'Festival Of The Dead' tour over AKERCOCKE, FLESHGORE and THE AMENTA. However, subsequently Lacey, Wilcock and Gray all decamped. Lacey was to return to the ranks as a fresh band unit was built up with ex-VISCERAL BLEEDING guitarist Martin Bermheden, bassist Damien Palmer and drummer Todd Hansen.
Stepping aside from music industry convention, THE BERZERKER released its fifth album, titled 'The Reawakening', through the band's own label Berzerker Industries in late 2008 as a mail order only release. Controversy hit the band again at the close of a UK tour when, on 2nd July at The Underworld in Camden, London, Luke Kenny alleged he was assaulted by a bouncer. Meantime, ex-band member Sam Bean joined British act MITHRAS in early 2009.
Former ABRAMELIN guitar player Tim Aldridge joined the band in 2009 for touring flanking THE AMENTA throughout January. September US concerts saw the band partnered with OBITUARY, KRISIUN, GOATWHORE and WARBRINGER.
The group courted controversy in May 2009 with their cover version of 'All The Things She Said', originally recorded by pseudo-lesbian Russian Pop duo TATU, with an accompanying video featuring two of Australia's best-known fetish models.
