Biography

A complex Innsbruck Gothic Rock act, DREAMS OF SANITY was created as a trio during April 1991 with a line-up of guitarist Christian K. Marx, bass player Michael Knoflach together with drummer Hannes Richter, the latter an erstwhile member of BLITZGEMETAL and HYPHEN. A little over a year later the band expanded its format inducting singer Gudrun Gfrerer along with keyboard player Florian Ratzesberger.

By the close of 1993 ructions within the band witnessed the departure of Richter. It would not be the only change, as Ratzesberger manouevered to second guitar and Stefan Manges took the keyboard role. Meanwhile, Gfrerer lost out to Birgit Moser and Romed Astner was inducted on drums. The vocal roles would switch again when Sandra Schleret and Martina Hornbacher assumed the duties for the band's debut demo recorded in May of 1994. Before the year was out DREAMS OF SANITY lost Ratzesberger's services and new face on second guitar turned out to be Andreas Wilauer.

With this line-up DREAMS OF SANITY recorded 'Komödia I' and 'Komödia II' in the Z-Sound-Studios in Innsburck. These two tracks emerged on the compilation album 'A Goddamned City'.

In 1996 'Ein Liebeslied' was laid down in the same studio and subsequently released on the Tyrol region 'Hardboiled' sampler. DREAMS OF SANITY hooked up with LACRIMOSA, THE GATHERING, SENTENCED and DEPRESSIVE AGE for the December 'Dark Winter Nights' European tour, after which a deal with Gothic Rock specialists Hall Of Sermon was struck.

DREAMS OF SANITY's promise was fulfilled with the issue of the inaugural November 1997 'Komödia' album. However, further line-up turbulence ensued with both Hornbacher and Astner departing. Hornbacher would come to attention with contributions to THERION and later ALAS. Harald Obexer would replace Astner but then Manges quit too. DREAMS OF SANITY made up the numbers by drafting Frédéric Heil.

This variant of the band committed themselves to recording the 1999 opus 'Masquerade' and follow up 'The Game'. Another band casualty had Obexer making his exit in 2000. Patrick Schrittwieser of DIVINE TEMPTATION duly took the drum role. Heil too bade farewell and DREAMS OF SANITY welcomed aboard Florian Steiner.

January of 2001 would witness a period of severe turbulence for the band. Not only did DREAMS OF SANITY split away from Hall Of Sermon Records but they would lose Schleret too, the vocalist joining SIEGFRIED and also founding her own outfit SOULSLIDE. Barbara Peer, of DIVINE TEMPTATION, would be drafted as replacement. However, having announced a comeback album billed provisionally as 'The End' in January 2002 DREAMS OF SANITY revealed that Sandra Schleret had been inticed back into the fold. Unfortunately the group came to a demise a matter of months later.

Sandra Schleret was announced as new vocalist for the Liechtenstein based Gothic Metal group ELIS, replacing the late Sabine Dünser, in late December 2006.
