Biography
The musclebound Vancouver native Jon Mikl Thor, a previous holder of the 'Mr. Junior Canada', 'Mr. Teenage U.S.A.' and 'Mr. North America' titles, enjoyed an extended media blitz during the mid 80s. A novel figure on the scene the larger than life blond vocalist would dismay audiences with such antics as breathing into hot water bottles until they burst, breaking bricks over his head and bending microphone stands. As illustrious a figure as THOR himself his sidekick, the delectable 'Pantera' (real name Rusty Hamilton), also caused a stir.
Prior to pursuing a musical career Thor, who had cut his teeth as bass player in IRON FALCON, had starred in a Las Vegas revue shoe 'Red, Hot & Blue' decked out in gladiator gear. Thor would also travel to Hawaii working as a nude waiter!
An early foray into the music scene appears to have been a 1977 12" single 'Muscle Rock' credited to THOR & THE IMPS. However, THOR officially arrived on the scene with the 1978 record 'Keep The Dogs Away' but would soon return to the world of bodybuilding. A mini album 'Unchained' released in 1984 on the Ultra Noise label heralded his return. THOR at this juncture comprised of Thor, Pantera, guitarist Steve Price, bass player Keith Zazzi and Mike Favata, the latter previously with Pop band THE HITS.
A string of albums and tours followed. Thor and Price would also gain production credits on DEATHMASK's 1986 outing 'Split The Atom'. THOR also kept his options open though by contributing music to and even appearing in the comedy movie 'Recruits'. Further film work found THOR sharing the lead in 'Zombie Nightmare' and the 1988 flick 'Edge Of Hell'. He would also act in 1987's 'Rock n' Roll Nightmare' cutting a soundtrack to this film under the alias of TRITONZ.
During 1997 THOR returned with a new set of recordings for the album 'Thunderstruck (Tales From The Equinox). The band comprised of all the original members including Pantera although the lady was now going by the title 'Cherry Bomb'.
Ex THOR drummer Frankie Rongo would later team up with Seattle act NIGHTSHADE. THOR's legacy lived on as in 1999 Swedish Black Metal band BEWITCHED cut their cover of 'Let The Blood Run Red'.
After years in the wilderness THOR made an unexpected return in 2001 touting a new album 'Dogz II' and putting in shows across America and Canada. A limited edition 7" split single- restricted to just 300 copies- also appeared. Titled 'Search And Destroy' the B side claimed to be provided by THOR & THE ASS BOYS! This band was in fact Thor's Punk alter ego with a band purporting to consist of Thor on vocals, guitarists Thundergeek and Slumpo, bass player Titty Tweaker and Poopy Arbuckle on drums.
THOR announced an extensive run of live shows throughout North America and Canada in September and October of 2002 plugging a new album 'Triumphant'. The muscular one would be back for a burst of East Coast US dates in March of 2004 in order to promote a new concept studio outing 'Beast Women From The Center Of The Earth'.
A new studio album, 'Thor Against The World' for release through Smog Veil Records, would be crafted with a production team of Frank Meyer, known as guitarist for THE STREETWALKIN' CHEETAHS, WAYNE KRAMER and CHEETAH CHROME, and 45 GRAVE's Bruce Duff in June. Recording in Los Angeles Thor utilised the services of Meyer, Duff, keyboard player Brian Kehew and Chris Marwkood of the BLARE BITCH PROJECT as his studio musicians.
September found THOR starring in his own concept movie 'The Intercessor', a sci fi, horror thriller filmed on location in Vancouver and London, Ontario. The film saw the singer playing the lead role described as "an ancient being who is on a quest to save the last innocent souls on Earth from the evil Mephisto and his allies the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." The singer's burgeoning movie career accelerated when the following month he starred in the John Fasano directed 'Murder At The Presidio' alongside Lou Diamond Philips and Jason Priestly, once again filming in Canada in Victoria, British Columbia.
Summer 2005 US dates saw DAMIEN STORM as support act. The band entered Iron Works Studios in Kelowna, British Columbia in November 2005, Jon Mikl Thor sharing production duties with Mike Kischnick of EMPYRIA and SEVERED SERENITY. Smog Veil Records announced a new THOR album, 'Devastation Of Musculation', for July 2006 release.
