Biography
An esteemed name on the Canadian Rock circuit. At their peak CHILLIWACK Rocked harder than any other Canuck act on the circuit but a lack of consistency and an ever fluctuating line up scuppered their chances of the real big break. Nevertheless, CHILLIWACK left an enviable legacy topped by the gold American single 'My Girl'.
Undisputed leader of the band Bill Henderson had learnt his craft with formative acts such as the RAMRODS and THE CLASSICS. He would gain his debut commercial release with experimental Rockers THE COLLECTORS. Following one now highly sought after album and a slew of guest roles to numerous international artists THE COLLECTORS, previously an unwieldy septet, trimmed off the ballast. As a leaner quartet the band would re dub themselves CHILLIWACK and go for a straight ahead Rock approach.
CHILLIWACK's opening gambit for the A&M label, often called 'The Mask' album although strictly speaking an eponymous release, garnered exposure due to the radio hit 'Rain-O'. However, Glenn Miller would decamp following the 1971 ambitious double album set (confusingly also simply titled 'Chilliwack') and was replaced by Claire Lawrence. However, Miller would re-enrol usurping his own successor in time for 1972's 'All Over You'.
The trio was augmented with second guitarist Howard Froese for the 'Riding High' album. Oddly this effort would be produced by Pop star TERRY JACKS and released on the singer's own Goldfish label. 'Crazy Talk' from the album would give CHILLIWACK a further hit.
The following year CHILLIWACK switched to the Casino label for the 'Rockerbox' album.
Another jump would see the band land a long term contract with the Mushroom Records concern based out of Vancouver. This relationship being kicked off with 'Dreams, Dreams, Dreams' which hosted no less than four hit singles.
Froese though would bid his farewell and Brian 'Too Loud' McLeod assumed the mantle of lead guitarist for the next outing 'Lights From The Valley'.
CHILLIWACK's internal turbulence would result in only Henderson and McLeod making it through to 1979's 'Breakdown In Paradise' record. New faces would be second guitarist John Roles, former PRISM bassist Abe Bryant and ex STRIKER drummer Rick Taylor.
Unfortunately Mushroom Records hit troubled times and would eventually be liquidated, CHILLIWACK manoeuvred over to Solid Gold Records, although now minus Roles and Taylor. The band would launch 'Wanna Be A Star', their biggest selling record of their career. The single 'My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)' not only won a prestigious Canadian Juno award but sold over half a million copies in America reaching no. 22 on the Billboard charts. The album would rack up sales of quarter of a million in the States and CHILLIWACK also pulled '(Don't Wanna) Live For A Living' and 'I Believe' as further radio hits. Amidst all this activity Henderson and McLeod would find the time to garner production credits for the debut TORONTO album.
1982's 'Opus X' continued their hit streak prompting a rapidly turned around 'Segue' greatest hits compilation in 1983. The band had been unable to tour in 1981 to promote 'Wanna Be A Star', tied down in the legal morass resulting in the collapse of Mushroom Records but in 1982 CHILLIWACK hit the road drafting Dennis Grayson on keyboards and New Yorker and TWISTED SISTER man Joe Franco on drums.
Proverbially lightning struck twice on the band though as to their dismay Solid Gold also filed for bankruptcy. With CHILLIWACK's prospects uncertain McLeod and Bryant forged the heavy duty Darby Mills fronted HEADPINS duly scoring a hit record. Henderson would go into production, working with TORONTO among others. CHILLIWACK would persevere on the live circuit until 1988 after which Henderson created the acoustic driven UHF (ULRICH / HENDERSON / FORBES) in alliance with PIED PUMPKIN's Shari Ulrich and Roy Forbes in 1990 for a brace of albums.
Latterly CHILLIWACK reformed, Henderson enlisting Roy Forbes alongside bassist Doug Edwards and drummer Jerry Adolphe. Sadly McLeod, after major sales with HEADPINS and a string of production and session credits, would succumb to cancer.
