Biography

A debut eponymous 1982 album included maverick fellow Canuck KIM MITCHELL on guitar. 'Strange Animal', released in 1985, found the man working alongside KING CRIMSON bassist Tony Levin, guitarists Chris Jarrett and David Rhodes and drummer Jerry Marotta. GOWAN's 1987 effort 'Great Dirty World' continued the alliance with Levin and also witnessed a welcome vocal contribution from JON ANDERSON of YES. Guitars came courtesy of DEVICE's Gene Black whilst Rob Brill and Nigel Olsson lent drums.

For 1987's EDDIE SCHWARTZ produced 'Lost Brotherhood' RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson was tempted to put down a rare guest session. Levin aids the cause once more as does ex-CONEY HATCH guitarist Steve Shelski.

It was to be a full six years before the next GOWAN release 'But You Can Call Me Larry'. Levin pulled his KING CRIMSON employer Robert Fripp into the studio to add guitar and STARZ guitarist Bobby Messano also added touches. Other guitarists were RED RIDER's Ken Greer, John Ashton, Bill Dillon and Colin Linden.

By the time of his 'Solo Live' album GOWAN was purely a one man solo effort. However, he would then team up as a full time band member with the mighty AOR institution STYX. Gowan would feature on the band's 'Brave New World' tour and the resulting 'Styxworld Live 2001' record which included a rendition of the GOWAN track 'Love Is A Criminal Mind'.

The 2006 live DVD contains a full live concert from 1990, video clips from 1985 and 1987, and an interview from 1990.
