Doom Death Metal band THY SERPENT formed in 1992 as guitarist Sami Tenetz began recording rehearsal tapes followed by more professional sounding demos, including January 1994's 'Frozen Memory'. With interest from Spinefarm Records Tenetz opted to recruit band members to a project he had worked on single handedly up to that point. After a number of changes, a stable group of musicians were found that enabled recording of September 1996's 'Forest Of Witchery' meisterwerk to be commenced. However, Spinefarm went on record to state that THY SERPENT would never play live. Drummer Agathon Frosteus (a.k.a. Ykä) held affiliations with AIRDASH, GLOOMY GRIM, WALHALLA, NOMICON, BARATHRUM and CORPORAL PUNISHMENT. Second opus 'Lord Of Twilight' arrived in February 1997. That same year the group shared a collaborative three way split single, 'Only Dust Moves...' with CHILDREN OF BODOM and NIGHTWISH.

The May 1998 album, 'Christcrusher', saw the notable inclusion of CHILDREN OF BODOM guitarist Alexi Laiho into the ranks. Members of the band involved themselves with BARATHRUM for the 2000 side project act SHAPE OF DESPAIR issuing the 'Shades of...' album.

THY SERPENT man Tomi Ullgren also performs as guitarist with RAPTURE. THY SERPENT credited drummer Teemu Laitinen, also a member of THRONE OF CHAOS, joined DIVERCIA for their 2004 album 'Cycle Of Zero'.
