Biography

SORE THROAT was a notorious Crust-Noisecore outfit from Yorkshire operational between 1987 and 1990. The group made its mark with a swathe of independent releases, a campaign of vilification of fellow artists and subsequent highlighted exposure of band members careers with within the music scene. Two musicians would go on to forge highly respected record labels, singer Rich Militia (a.k.a. Richard M. Walker) with The Miskatonik Foundation, and drummer Hammy (Paul Halmshaw) with Peaceville Records.

Pre SORE THROAT, John Doom had played with DOOM as vocalist / bassist, PELVIC THRUST, POLICE BASTARD and CAIN. Brian Talbot also held DOOM association and had ties to PELVIC THRUST, ACKWORTH ST. CHAOS FRONT, METAL MOTHERFUCKERS FROM MARS, BUGEYED, WARFEAR, WOODHOUSE REJECTS, VITURAL REALITY, BLOOD SUCKING FREAKS, STALINGRAD and DEVILS. Rich Militia was involved with WARTORN and WARFEAR as guitarist.

Vehemently opposed to commercialism within the Hardcore scene, SORE THROAT lyrically lambasted in vicious the Crossover of acts such as D.R.I., SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and NAPALM DEATH. Musically the group innovatively combined Punk and Grindcore as one of the earliest protaganists of what was to become known as Noisecore.

SORE THROAT's opening salvo came with the 1987 'Aural Butchery' demo. The quartet at this juncture comprised vocalist Rich Militia, guitarist John Doom, Bassist Brian Talbot and drummer Nick Royles. That same year the 42 track EP 'Death To Capitalist Hardcore' emerged. They returned in quickfire fashion with the 1988 'Noise Annoys' demo and, signing to the Manic Ears label, the 'Unhindered By Talent' album. Cassette versions added the complete 'Death To Capitalist Hardcore' set as bonus tracks. Second album 'Disgrace To The Corpse Of Sid' also arrived in 1988 as did 'Inde$troy', although this latter effort was released under the name SAW THROAT.

A line-up change saw Paul Halmshaw taking over on drums and the 'Never Mind The Napalm...' album was delivered in 1989. European editions hosted 60 tracks whilst the US version only included a mere 16 songs. Another revision of the name was witnessed with the 'Soar Throat' EP of 1989. Other releases that year included the compilation album 'And We Don't Care' and a three song demo, which featured two POISON IDEA cover versions.

The group was heavily bootlegged, releases including a 7" vinyl single 'Abraham's Ear', comprising the 'Aural Butchery' and live tracks, various unofficial re-releases of 'Death To Capitalist Hardcore', albums 'Death To Capitalist Grindcore', 'Death To Capitalist Thrashcore', 'Algo Que Nunca Fue', 'Encerrado En El Trago' and 'F.O.A.D.' as a split effort shared with material from SLUDGELORD.

SORE THROAT disbanded in 1990. Walker was already active with SLUDGELORD and would go on to forge SOLSTICE and ISEN TORR. Brian Talbot went on to LAZARUS BLACKSTAR and KHANG. John Doom became a DJ at Radio Kerrang whilst Nick Royles set up an anarchist book mail order service.

In 2006 the 'Death To Capitalist Halmshaw' compilation compiled all SORE THROAT demo tracks, the 'Death To Capitalist Hardcore' EP plus rare live material and unreleased tracks.
