Biography
HOLY MOSES specialises in brutal Techno Thrash of the highest order and created an impact with a string of impressive albums and the striking vocals (not to mention looks as well!) of Sabina Classen after scoring a deal with Aaaarrg Records. Forged in 1979 by bassist Raymond Brüssler, vocalist / guitarist Jochen Fünders and drummer Peter Vonderstein, this trio first gained local notoriety in the staunchly Catholic city of Aachen by being ejected from their church basement rehearsal complex when the proprietors discovered all of the crucifixs had been turned upside down.
Following a support gig to VENOM at Eindhoven's famous Dynamo Club in 1981, Peter Vonderstein would be superseded by Paul Linzenich. Later that same year, Jochen Fünders lost his position to former DISASTER guitarist Andy Classen whilst new man on vocals would be Iggy. Classen's then paramedic girlfriend, Sabina, reluctantly took up the microphone. This revised version of HOLY MOSES performed its inaugural gig in November of 1982. The following year Sabina and Andy got married. In 1984 Paul Linzenich exited in order to pursue his education and was replaced by Jörg 'Snake' Heins. This period of tribulation also saw Sabina opting out briefly, but returning within a few weeks. This move resulted in the demos 'Walpurgis Nacht' and 'The Bitch'.
Signing with Aaaarrg Records, the band had recruited drummer Herbert Dreger to record the 1986 debut 'Queen Of Siam', produced by MEKONG DELTA bassist Ralph Hubert. A switch in drummers found the 19 year old Uli Kusch installed on the drum kit. Founder member Raymond Brüssler decamped in September of 1986, relocating to Thailand. Bassist Andre Chapelier joined, although the latter's tenure was short as he debuted on on second album 'Finished With The Dogs' before he promptly left.
Erstwhile members Jochen Fünders and Herbert Dreger forged HEALER alongside VANADIUM's Achim Ganser and KRYPTERIA guitarist Chris Siemons, issuing a four track 1987 demo. The following year Fünders and Dreger joined DARXON.
Having promoted the 'Queen Of Siam' opus with supports to STEELER, RAGE, ANGEL DUST and PAGANINI, plus having opened for D.R.I. and HOLY TERROR on their 1987 European tour, HOLY MOSES added second guitarist Georgie Symbos and, still lacking a permanent bassist, TARGET's Johan Susant filled in for live dates before a new bassist was found in ex-DARKNESS man Thomas Berker. The recently added Georgie Symbos departed to join LIVING DEATH, however but by July 1988 erstwhile MAMMUT and RISK guitarist Thilo Herrmann completed the line-up.
The band signed to major label Warner Bros. Records, no doubt aided by Sabina's exposure as a TV presenter on the 'Mosh' programme. HOLY MOSES recorded their third album 'The New Machine Of Liechtenstein' at Horus Sound Studios in Hannover under the guidance of producer Alex Perialas. Thilo Herrmann left during the sessions to re-join RISK and his place was taken by Rainer Laws. Strangely, Laws did not contribute musically to 'The New Machine Of Liechtenstein' album, but did design the album cover. Herrmann later emerged as a member of RUNNING WILD and GLENMORE.
Having released the album HOLY MOSES, performed at the Dynamo open air festival in 1989 to 20'000 people and toured Europe on a package billing with SACRED REICH and FORBIDDEN, but strangely Warner Bros. dropped the band. Undeterred, HOLY MOSES carried on gigging, including dates in East Germany alongside BLITZZ, as a quartet minus an ailing Rainer Laws, and were signed to band manager Uli Wiehagen's newly established West Virginia Records in order to release the Will Reid Dick produced 'World Chaos' album in 1990. Upon completion of these sessions Kusch would be enticed away by GAMMA RAY and erstwhile LIVING DEATH man Atomic Steif manned the drums for live work. Post HOLY MOSES drummer Ulli Kusch teamed up with noted Punk band DIE SKEPTIKER, a reformed GRAVE DIGGER then HELLOWEEN.
HOLY MOSES folded in 1992, West Virginia signing off with the compilation 'Too Drunk To Fuck'. Soon after, Sabina Classen formed TEMPLE OF THE ABSURD in collaboration with WARPATH guitarist Schrödey. Andy Classen entered the world of production gaining credits on albums by the likes of ASPHYX, RYKERS and CRACK UP.
Andy Classen resurrected the HOLY MOSES brand in 1994 for an album billed 'No Matter What's The Cause'. Studio contributors included Sabina as guest vocalist, the ANTHRAX, NUCLEAR ASSAULT and S.O.D. credited Dan Lilker on bass and RYKERS drummer Meff. That same year Andy and Sabina got divorced.
In 1997 Classen created RICHTHOFEN with former WARPATH singer Dirk Weiss. During mid 2001 HOLY MOSES reformed, Sabina Classen being joined by guitarists Franky Brotz and Jörn Schubert and drummer Julien Schmidt. The band was announced as forming part of the 2002 KREATOR, DESTRUCTION and SODOM Thrash extravaganza but would pull back to concentrate on writing new music for the 'Disorder Of The Order' album. Andreas Libera, a veteran of AETERNITAS and COLD EMBRACE, joined the band on bass that year. HOLY MOSES underwent further changes in mid 2003, pulling in Alex De Blanco on bass and the EROSION and RICHTHOFEN credited Michael Hankel on guitar.
In October of 2004 HOLY MOSES signed a new record deal with Armageddon Music, the label owned by Lars Ratz of METALIUM, for recording of their tenth album 'Strength Power Will Passion' with TEMPLE OF THE ABSURD guitarist Schrödey acting as producer. Sabina Classen guested on the 2005 album 'Repent Or Seal Your Fate' by Hannover Thrashers RECKLESS TIDE.
The band scored a notable first in late April when they performed for United Nations peace keeping forces in Kabul, the capitol city of Afghanistan. HOLY MOSES toured Germany packaged as part of the 'Wacken Open Air Roadshow' with ILLDISPOSED, SUIDAKRA and REGICIDE during May.
The band's performance at the 3rd September 'Occultfest' in Holland proved notable for debuting a new band line-up, fresh faces being bassist Ozzy, of LA CRY, TEMPLE OF THE ABSURD and WARPATH, plus drummer "Asgard Niels" Holub of Grindcore band POOSTEW. Further festival gigs saw the band putting in performances at the 'Out Of Control' event in October and the December 'Antichristmas Meeting' in Berlin. A scheduled appearance at the 'Art Of Darkness' festival in Warburg was cancelled after the group's drummer, Asgard, injured his knee. HOLY MOSES re-inducted former member, and notably ex-LIVING DEATH and SODOM drummer, Atomic Steiff in February 2007. The new look band debuted at the Party Hard Festival in Schluchsee on April 14th.
The album 'Agony Of Death', released in September 2008 via Wacken Records, was recorded at the Blue Castle Studio near Hamburg with guitar player Michael Hankel acting as producer. Quite novelly, 'Agony of Death' was made available in three different versions, each featuring the songs in a different sequence. The lavish digipack with a fold-out cover included 12 songs plus all intros and outros in conceptual order. The regular jewel case consisted of ten tracks without intros and outros, whilst the double vinyl edition featured one intro and one outro per side.
Guest contributions abounded. Ferdy Doernberg, of AXEL RUDI PELL, contributed keyboards and samples, as well as intros and outros, and played slide guitar on the song 'Through Shattered Minds'. Guitar player Ralph Santolla, of OBITUARY, DEATH, ICED EARTH and DEICIDE, delivered guitars solo on 'World In Darkness' and 'Dissociative Disorder', while 'Angels In War' featured a solo by his OBITUARY colleague Trevor Peres. Further guitar solos were included courtesy of Janos Murri, of DARKSIDE and DEMOLITION, on 'Imagination' and 'Alienation'. The album's notable background vocalists included Henning Basse, of METALIUM, on 'Schizophrenia', Wolf Süssenbeck, of DARKSIDE and DEMOLITION, on 'Imagination' and Schmier, of DESTRUCTION and HEADHUNTER, on 'The Cave'. AGENT STEEL's Karlos Medina played guest bass on 'Imagination'.
HOLY MOSES teamed up with the UK's BENEDICTION for a European co-headlining tour in September and October.
