Biography

A highly successful project band initiated by former VELVET VIPER and VIVA bassist Lars Ratz, singer Henning Basse, SAVATAGE guitarist Chris Caffrey, second guitarist Matthias Lange and BEAU NASTY, ARTENSION and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN drummer MIKE TERRANA. METALIUM's debut 1999 album, 'Millenium Metal Chapter One', made a significant impact on the international scene. A flawlessly hewn slab of Power Metal, the record's conceptual base centred on the exploits of a"Metal hero" character - Metalian. As bonuses, the band cut versions of DEEP PURPLE's 'Smoke on the Water' and ACCEPT's 'Burning', the latter included on a limited edition digipack. Recorded for Armageddon Products the record's global reach was aided by licenses with Massacre Records in Europe, Pavement for North America, Avalon Marquee In Japan and in South American territories via Hellion Records.

METALIUM toured to promote the record as support to PRIMAL FEAR and SINERGY in Europe during 1999, but not before Terrana had opted out to join RAGE. The band pulled in British born Mark Cross, whose credits stretched across Greek acts such as SCRAPTOWN, MAGNA CARTA and SPITFIRE as well as occult Metal band NIGHTFALL. Whilst in the employ of METALIUM, Cross would also session on KINGDOM COME's 'Too' album. Matthias Lange would also put in a guest appearance on the SHOCKMACHINE self-titled 1999 debut, performing on the Japanese edition bonus cut cover version of OZZY OSBOURNE's 'Steal Away (The Night').

METALIUM would make inroads into the DVD market too with the issue of 'Metallian Attack- Part One'. Both Cross and Lange would also operate on the German club circuit with JUDAS PRIEST tribute band ELECTRIC EYE, an all star collective including X-13 and SHOCKMACHINE guitarist Rolly Feldman, PARAGON bass player Big M and X-13 singer Jörg Wesenberg.

METALIUM's second offering, June 2000's 'State Of Triumph-Chapter Two', furthered their cause with another solid display of riffmongery. String and orchestration arrangements were credited to Paul Morris of RAINBOW repute whilst Ratz's ZED YAGO colleague Jutta Weinhold provided some colour on the vocal front. Japanese editions included the customary extra song with a take on the KANSAS classic 'Dust In The Wind'. Another offbeat cover version saw the record closing out with an interpretation of John Miles' 'Music'. Involved for these sessions would be another American guitarist JACK FROST. Also rendered would be a version of the SCORPIONS 'Another Piece Of Meat' for inclusion on a tribute package and the group committed a further, somewhat unexpected, track to tape, donating their beefed up 'Thank You For The Music' to a Nuclear Blast ABBA tribute compilation.

For live work METALIUM adventurously emulated their album cover hero and stalked the stages of Europe bedecked in full metal-muscle body armour. Shows also proved notable for Ratz' predilection for fire-breathing. Unfortunately METALIUM's line-up would prove fluid and in August of 2001 Cross too decamped joining premier German Metal act HELLOWEEN. Frost too opted out, teaming up with SAVATAGE.

METALIUM appointed Michael Ehre of MURDER ONE as substitute for Cross on the third album, February 2002's 'Hero-Nation - Chapter Three'. Featured guests included the esteemed personages of soprano Carolin Fortenbacher plus keyboard players DON AIREY, a veteran of OZZY OSBOURNE, RAINBOW and WHITESNAKE amongst many others, and erstwhile URIAH HEEP man KEN HENSLEY. For this outing, which hosted a hidden track 'Heart Of The Tiger', METALIUM had generated some love interest for their Metalian character by introducing his partner Metaliana, portrayed by ex-FAIRY MIRROR singer SAEKO.

Live promotion throughout the summer saw headline shows with support from EDENBRIDGE. September found the band performing at an all star Metal benefit festival in aid of victims of the Elbe flooding. Joining the band onstage for this show would be guest Jutta Weinhold of ZED YAGO as well as KEN HENSLEY with his distinctive Hammond organ sound. The band would then journey to Brazil in October for a run of dates once again supported by EDENBRIDGE.

METALIUM's 2003 recorded studio opus 'In League As One - Chapter Four' found keyboard player DON AIREY in evidence once again. To promote the record the band united with FREEDOM CALL and DARK AGE for the European 'Wacken Road Show 2004' commencing in late April. September gigs in Europe saw the band partnering with SAXON and DREAM EVIL. In side activity, Michael Ehre, Henning Basse and Lars Ratz would be heavily involved in the career of Japanese singer SAEKO and her debut album 'Above Heaven Below Heaven'.

METALIUM's fifth opus, 'Demons Of Insanity-Chapter Five', again embellished with the keyboard touches of DON AIREY, was recorded at Jumpower Studios in Mallorca and Tornado Studios in Hamburg. Japanese versions of the album added a cover version of the LOUDNESS classic 'Rock n' Roll Crazy Night' re-billed as 'Heavy Metal Crazy Night'. The band partnered with DREAM EVIL once again for Japanese shows in February 2005. September METALIUM shows at the UK 'Bloodstock' festival and the Jahnhalle in Nordenham would be filmed for a DVD release 'Metalian Attack - Part Two'.

In October former METALIUM drummer Mark Cross resurfaced with a new band project billed GOD'S ARMY, a collaboration with vocalist / bass player John A.B.C. Smith of GALLOWS POLE, HALLOWED and AT VANCE repute together with guitarists Ian O'Sullivan, of HALLOWED, and Don Amiro. In March 2006 former METALIUM guitarist JACK FROST enrolled into the ranks of cult British Heavy Metal band MARSHALL LAW.

A METALIUM DVD, 'Metalian Attack - Part 2', released in May, comprised footage from the band's September 23rd, 2005 concert at the Jahnhalle in Nordenham, Germany plus material from the group's appearance at the UK 'Bloodstock' festival.

Matthias Lange joined SINNER in May 2006 for the album 'Masks Of Sanity'. In June the METALIUM rhythm section of bassist Lars Ratz and drummer Michael Ehré announced the APOLON side project, an eclectic union with DARK FORTRESS guitarist V Santura with Dutchman Joost van den Broek of AFTER FOREVER on keyboards.

METALIUM's 'Nothing To Undo - Chapter VI' album, featuring a cover version of QUEEN's 'The Show Must Go On', arrived in February 2007. METALIUM's seventh studio album, 'Incubus - Chapter Seven', came out in February 2008.

The band set 'Grounded - Chapter VIII' as the title of their 2009 album via Armageddon Products.
