Biography

A highly inventive and technical Thrash Metal act out of Velbert, North Rhine-Westphalia. MEKONG DELTA originally went under pseudonyms to protect their true identities. Project mentor and bassist Ralph Hubert, owner of Aaarg Records, (a.k.a. 'Bjorn Eklund) assembled an all star cast of seasoned musicians from the extreme Metal scene of the day. LIVING DEATH guitarists Frank Fricke and Reiner Kelch performed on the 1987 Wolfgang Borgmann ('Keil') fronted debut album under the guises of Vincent St. John and Rolf Stein respectively whilst the RAGE duo of Peter "Peavy" Wagner and guitarist Jochen Schröder would also be involved in the studio. Drummer Jörg Michael (a.k.a. 'Gordon Perkins') was also a member of RAGE at the time. This line-up was retained for the 1988 follow up 'The Music Of Erich Zann'.

Unable to attend the recording of 'The Gnome' EP, Jörg Michael's place was taken by HOLY MOSES and GAMMA RAY drummer Uli Kusch under the anglicised nom de guerre of 'Patrick Duval'.

Wolfgang Borgmann left in 1990 to be replaced by erstwhile SIREN singer Douglas Lee for the 'Dances Of Death' mini-album. Michael joined HEADHUNTER. Ex-SODOM and U.D.O. guitarist Uwe Baltrusch played on the 1989 'Principle Of Doubt' album, this opus seeing Jörg Michael's return to the drum kit. For the 1991 live offering 'Live At An Exhibition' the group had installed new guitarist Georg Syrmbos.

A latter day ex-MEKONG DELTA drummer, Peter Haas of AIN'T DEAD YET and CALHOUN CONQUER repute, featured on 1992's 'Kaleidoscope' and the 1994 effort 'Visions Fugitive'. Haas later joined BABYLON SAD and KROKUS. Jörg Michael's highly rated skills would find the stickman journeying through LAOS, HEADHUNTER, GLENMORE, GRAVE DIGGER, RUNNING WILD and STRATOVARIUS. By 2004 he was ensconced in the ranks of British Hard Rock veterans SAXON, appearing on their 'Lionheart' album.

In the wake of the 22 track Zardoz Music compilation, 'The Principle Of Doubt', 2006 would witness renewed activity on the MEKONG DELTA front with news of a new album in the works compiled by Ralf Hubert and guitarist Peter Sjöberg. Replacing Haas on drums would be former band member Uli Kusch. Although the music for a new record had been completed, by November MEKONG DELTA had still not secured a singer. Typically ambitious, MEKONG DELTA tackled a redition of 'Symphony Nr. 10' by Dimitri Schostakowitsch.

The album 'Lurking Fear' was made available in Europe in August 2007 through AFM Records, issued both as a standard CD as well as a double vinyl album. The limited-edition digipack included a bonus DVD containing the band's 21st December 1991 concert in Frankfurt, Germany. MEKONG DELTA's line-up on 'Lurking Fear' comprised bassist Ralf Hubert alongside drummer Uli Kusch, singer Leo Szpigiel, of ANGEL DUST, CROWS, SCANNER and DUKE, and guitarist Peter Sjöberg, also known as 'Peter Lake' from THEORY IN PRACTICE. The album was released in North America on 22nd April 2008 via Locomotive Records.

MEKONG DELTA announced the addition of vocalist Martin LeMar, of TOMORROW'S EVE, and drummer Alex Landenburg, from AXXIS, AT VANCE and ANNIHILATOR, to the group's ranks in September 2008.
