Biography

PROTECTOR emanate from Wolfsburg and date to their formation in 1986 by guitarist Hansi Muller and ex-DEATH ATTACK drummer Michael Hasse. The percussionist also held the distinction of being the co-ordinator of the SODOM fan club. An early bassist, Michael Schnabel, exited in 1986 - going on to join HERITAGE and subsequently MANDRILL. Having added former INZEST vocalist Martin Missy and bassist Ede Belichmeier in March 1987, PROTECTOR recorded their first two song demo. This tape led to a deal with Atom H Records, run by Jürgen Engler of DIE KRUPPS, and the first mini album, 'Misanthropy', the same year. Although a decidedly raw piece of work 'Misanthropy' was widely hailed across the underground Metal scene as a near classic piece of German Thrash.

1988's 'Golem' featured SODOM's Angel Ripper on the track 'Space Cake'. Unfortunately, vocalist Missy quit in early 1989. He was replaced by Olli Wiebel for a European tour alongside WEHRMACHT but Missy rejoined in time to record 'Urm The Mad'. However, in December of 1989, following a gig in Düsseldorf, Missy quit yet again.

Fronted by Olli Wiebel the group released another mini-album, 'Leviathan's Desire', in 1990 and toured Germany once more, this time as support to NAPALM DEATH. Missy would still be in the picture as a background contributor, donating lyrics to four songs on PROTECTOR's next album 'A Shedding Of Skin'. However, line-up problems hit the band prior to recording 'A Shedding Of Skin'. Belichmeier quit - having his position filled by bassist Matze Grün - and Muller also departed leaving Wiebel to record guitar parts as PROTECTOR became a trio.

Tragedy struck in February 1994 when Hasse died as a direct result of his drug addiction. PROTECTOR would persevere though, eventually find a new drummer in Marco Pappe and toured alongside D.V.S. and CRUSHER. PROTECTOR, according to reports, had apparently split after recording 'The Heritage' in 1994. However, the band did in fact operate for some time afterward putting in live gigs with an ever fluctuating line up. Grün founded SQUARE WAVES, releasing the 1995 demo 'Three Dimensional Hate'.

During 1993 ex-PROTECTOR personnel Martin Missy and ex-bassist Michael Schnabel would be active with the R.A.U. project. Subsequently Missy united with another ex-PROTECTOR bassist Ede Belichmeier and operating covers act ENERGYANT. Matze Grün later joined WASTELAND then Braunschweig based HEADSHOT.

Vocalist Martin Missy, breaking over a decade's break away from music, would for a time front the Swedish Metal band RUINS OF TIME, appearing on their 2001 album 'Timetraveller. Drummer Marco Pappe was to resurrect the band under a new name in December of 2001. In 2004 Martin Missy re-emerged fronting PSYCHOMANTHIUM, an "old-school Speed/Thrash metal" band featuring ARKHAM 13 guitarist Derek 'Derekonomicon' Schilling, the INTERNAL BLEEDING and CATASTROPHIC credited bassist Brian Hobbie and ARKHAM 13 drummer Ant Ichrist. The band signed to Poland's Still Dead Productions for a debut album 'Death Attack'. Missy subsequently joined PHIDION.
