Biography

ORPHANED LAND purvey their own brand of what has been dubbed "Oriental Metal". The group was founded in 1991 under the original title of RESURRECTION switching to ORPHANED LAND the following year. The band line-up stood at vocalist Kobi Farhi, guitarists Yossi Sassi and Matti Svatitzki, bassist Uri Zelcha and drummer Sami Bachar.

As such the band guested for visiting international artists such as TIAMAT and CATHEDRAL. In 1993 the debut demo 'The Beloveds Cry' was issued immediately creating a media stir. So much so that Greek label Metal Invader would re-release the tape on CD format shortly after. The demo was re-issued by Holy Records in 1994 and yet again by the MDMA label in 1999, giving the band the odd historical quirk of having their demo re-issued three times by three different labels.

ORPHANED LAND struck a deal with the French Holy Records organisation for two albums opening proceedings with 1994's 'Sahara' which included reworks of all four demo tracks. The lyrics of 'Sahara' dealt almost exclusively on religious based themes and/or adaptations of writing from various holy scriptures. The 1996 album 'El Norra Alila' also sold well across Europe prompting a fresh deal with the German Century Media label.

The band would also donate their version of 'Mercy' to the PARADISE LOST tribute 'As We Die For Paradise Lost'. In later years ORPHANED LAND underwent line up fluctuations citing a line up roster of Farhi, Sassi, Zelcha, female vocalist Shlomit Levy and keyboard player Itzik Levy. ORPHANED LAND signed to the German Century Media label for a 2003 album 'Mabool - The Story Of The Three Sons Of Seven', recorded by the band themselves in Zaza and Bardo Studios in Tel Aviv. A limited initial pressing contained a bonus disc of an acoustic live show including a medley of archive tracks and a cover version of PARADISE LOST's.

Profound Lore Records re-issued ORPHANED LAND's early Holy Records albums, 1994's 'Sahara' and 1996's 'El Norra Alila' in a double gatefold vinyl format limited to 500 copies each during 2005. The band lent support to KREATOR and TRISTANIA in Mexico during March prior to landing the special guest spot to PARADISE LOST's European tour in April. ORPHANED LAND announced their first US show that same year, performing at the Atlanta, Georgia 'ProgPower USA VI' festival in September.

ORPHANED LAND engaged in European touring in alliance with KNORKATOR, SPELLBOUND, NOISE FOREST and ENSIFERUM during April and May of 2006.
