CRIPPLE BASTARDS

Members

Biography

Asti based Grindcore act CRIPPLE BASTARDS have over the years forged alliances with many of their international colleagues on a series of split singles. The group came into being when teenagers vocalist / guitarist Alberto (16) and drummer Giulio (13) teamed up with the Punk-Metal band GRIMCORPSES. By 1988 an extreme Metal direction had been decided upon and a name switch to CRIPPLE BASTARDS highlighted this shift. The group also put in their debut 'gig' at a friends birthday party.

The band did get to record a demo in 1989 (a blistering 25 songs in six minutes!) but somehow neglected to distribute it. The two protagonists started a side Hardcore band DISSONANCE in 1990 together with friend Luigi on drums. This unit would see the first ocassion Giulio took up lead vocals. Both DISSONANCE and CRIPPLE BASTARDS would share cassette space with K.S.G. (yet another extra curricular project of Giulio and Alberto- this time a sombre ambient affair) for a three way demo tape with CRIPPLE BASTARD laying down no less than 64 tracks. This tape would be given away free by the group members at other bands gigs.

In 1991 DISSONANCE folded but K.S.G. scored five tracks included on the 'Killed By The Machinary Of Sorrow' compilation. CRIPPLE BASTARDS meantime cut their second demo. The band put in their first proper gig proudly announcing that, bar a handful of determined fans, they cleared the venue!

1992 saw CRIPPLE BASTARDS inaugural vinyl appearance with the band donating two tracks from their 1991 demo to the 'Son Of Bblleeauurrggh!' compilation on Slap A Ham Records. In August the band, still a duo of Giulio on vocals along with drums and Alberto on guitar, put in their first foreign show at the Croatian 'Melody' festival. Shortly after the act drafted drummer Michele Delemont but would remain without a bass player for some time to come. Not content with resting on their laurels Giulio and Alberto struck up another side outing HARSH FEELINGS.

Two shared tape releases emerged on the bands own E.U. label in 1993. Live recordings from their Croatian festivial performance were allied with tracks from Belgians AGATHOCLES and another 40 demo tracks featured alongside DARK SEASON songs. The band somehow managed to squeeze no less than 44 tracks onto their shared 1993 7" single with Spain's VIOLENT HEADACHE. These tracks were recorded in 1991 as a duo of Giulio and Alberto on a small cassette recorder in the band's rehearsal room. Although he appears on the sleeve artwork drummer Michele did not perform although he did feature on the rare 1993 split single with W.B.I. Early material from the bands GRIMCORPSES era was released on a cassette with more recent CRIPPLE BASTARDS, HARSH FEELINGS and FILTHY CHARITY material.

The band, back to a deadly duo minus Michele, would also manage to put in live dates in Germany. Other recordings that year included 6 new originals for a split single with SOCIAL GENOCIDE, 5 PATARENI cover versions for a tribute album 'Obrade', an AGATHOCLES cover for the 'Kill Your Idols' compilation and even a BEATLES cover.

1994 would prove a taxing year for the band as Alberto struggled with a drug problem. Nevertheless split releases with PSYCHOTIC NOISE and SENSELESS APOCALYPSE. The EP 'Frammenti Di Vita' comprised solely of cover versions with CRIPPLE BASTARDS paying homage to extreme Italian acts such as INDEGESTI, WRETCHED, NEGAZIONE, NABAT, UNDERAGE, IMPACT and BLUE VOMIT. A further split 7" on the German Regurgitated Semen label, in collaboration with PATARENI, included a cover of the KING CRIMSON classic '21st Century Schizoid Man'. However, after these songs were laid to rest Michele quit the band but was persuaded to stay on in order to conclude recording commitments. CRIPPLE BASTARDS did put in a batch of Italian and German gigs with a stand in drummer. Before the end of the year CRIPPLE BASTARD's tenure without a bassist was ended when Brazilian Eduardo joined the band.

In 1995 a whole slew of split singles arrived with PSYCHOTIC NOISE on the Belgian Grinding Madness label, with CAPITALIST CASUALTIES on the American Wiggy Bits double 10" release and PRËPARATION H for another American label Vicious Interference. With Michele still hanging on the band recorded a mass of material throughout the year that would see the light of day on the full length 'Your Lies In Check' album, a split album with SUPPRESSION and yet more split singles. Some material was also bootlegged in South America on a single split with WRETCHED.

CRIPPLE BASTARDS finally replaced Michele with ex ARTURO man Paulo. An impromptu live jam with Giulio gusting for IMPACT would surface on a split 10" single with PATARENI.

Eduardo returned to Brazil in May of 1996 and a temporary replacement was found in the form of ARTURO's Stefano. This liaison soon broke down as both ARTURO men departed. CRIPPLE BASTARDS remained as a duo until STUNTPLASTICPARK man Gaba made an entrance. The state would intervene though and after just two shows Gaba was forced out in order to fulfil his military service duties. Paulo would deputise in the studio to cut some tracks for a HUSKER DÜ tribute album on Beserk Records before quitting again. The group laid down some more material with Giulio on drums once more until former WELCH and ACREDINE man Walter Dr. Tomas took the post. A new bassist was found in Gigi Pacino.

The new look quartet would perform at some chaotic Italian Hardcore festivals before a date in Slovenia before recording tracks for a split single with I.R.F. Further gigs at Italian Punk festivals followed before Pacino broke ranks. More live shows, this time in Austria, were completed without a bassist but upon their return Panz took the four string position.

As 1997 turned into 1998 there were rumblings of disquiet from founder member Alberto. Although persuaded to stay the course for the next round of recordings by the time of CRIPPLE BASTARDS support tour of Italy to Brazilians RATOS DE PORAO it was with ex HATEBOX man Fulvio on guitar alongside Alberto. Yet again line up problems would blight the band with Panz being fired and Alberto finally packing his bags. ENTROPIA drummer Andrea duly filled the bass slot for a tour of Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic and Germany. A series of Belgian shows would see Alberto returning for these and the next round of studio recordings.

1999 predictably saw CRIPPLE BASTARDS in turmoil once again as Dr. Tomas made his exit. Al Mazzotti of Punk band STINKING POLECATS and Thrash Metal band AUTOPSIA was pulled in for live work although Dr. Tomas remained in place for recordings. Tragedy would strike in the midst of European dates though as the band was involved in a serious crash which injured Mazzotti's hand.

1999 would see the issue of the 'Falafel Grind' tribute through the Czech Obscene Productions label. This collection comprised 25 bands paying homage by covering CRIPPLE BASTARDS songs including DEMISOR, BIRDFLESH, HATEBOX, BLOODSUCKERS, ENTROPIA, STRONG INTENTION, MINDLOCK, CARCASS GRINDER, THE BUTTPLUGZ, ACROHOLIA, GROINCHURN and many more.

In 2008 CRIPPLE BASTARDS recorded the album 'Variante Alla Morte' for UK based Feto Records, the custum imprint owned by Shane Embury from NAPALM DEATH and Mick Kenney of ANAAL NATHRAKH. US concerts scheduled for May 2009 when the band's drummer broke his hand.

Selfmadegod Records released CRIPPLE BASTARDS four CD box set 'Age Of Vandalism' on 16th July 2009, this digipack featuring remastered versions of all of the CRIPPLE BASTARDS' releases from 1988 to 1993 plus an extensive array of previously unreleased tracks.
