Announced during early 2006, LEGION OF THE DAMNED was actually a continuation of leading Black-Thrash Metal act OCCULT, founded in 1990 by ex-BESTIAL SUMMONING vocalist Sephiroth. He would later drop the corpsepaint and revert to his real name of Maurice Swinkle. OCCULT vocalist Rachel Heyzer was previously a member of Death Metal band PATHOLOGY. Heyzer would later double up duties by fronting the veteran Death Metal act SINISTER for their 'Creative Killings' record.

UK and European dates projected into October 2003, dubbed the 'Bonded By Metal' trek, found the band forming up a billing comprising EXODUS, AGENT STEEL, NUCLEAR ASSAULT, MORTICIAN, GOD DETHRONED, and CALLENISH CIRCLE. As the year closed OCCULT announced they had signed to the Karmageddon Media label for a new album 'Elegy For The Weak'. This opus would see production credits going to former HOLY MOSES guitarist Andy Classen.

Early 2004 would see the issue of the band's debut DVD through Lowlifemedia Productions. Entitled 'To Be Thrashed - By Occult' it comprised live footage from recent gigs and early club performances, interviews with present and past band members, onstage jams with PENTACLE and DESASTER as well as promotional video clips for 'Killing for Recreation' and 'Doomsday Destroyer'. A short burst of Benelux dates in September 2004 saw the band united with CALLENISH CIRCLE, DISMEMBER and HEARSE. That same month the band entered Stage One studios in Bühne, Germany with producer Andy Classen to craft their sixth album.

The band announced a touring partnership as part of the December 2005 'X-Mas' festivals in Europe ranked alongside recently resurrected UK Thrashers ONSLAUGHT, EXODUS, KATAKLYSM, UNLEASHED, BEHEMOTH, and PRIMORDIAL. Following these gigs OCCULT adopted the new title LEGION OF THE DAMNED. The band formed up a European 'No Mercy' festival package for dates across Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland in April, ranked alongside KATAKLYSM, GRIMFIST and CANNIBAL CORPSE. The band's appearance at the Gelsenkirchen 'Rock Hard' festival in Germany during June was taped and subsequently the track 'Legion Of The Damned' was included on the 'Rock Hard' magazine compilation album 'Rock Hard: Das Festival 2006'.

Second album 'Sons Of The Jackal' arrived in January 2007, impressively entering the national German charts at number 54. LEGION OF THE DAMNED acted as support to CELTIC FROST and KREATOR for European tour dates in March. That April War Anthem Records re-issued 'Sons Of The Jackal' on vinyl as a limited edition run of 500 pieces.

December 2008's 'Cult Of The Dead' album came in three different formats. A three disc "deluxe edition" included a bonus CD and a bonus DVD and a limited edition digipack added a bonus DVD. The three disc deluxe version hosted a CD containing a recording of the band's performance at Germany's 'Rock Hard' festival in 2006 plus a DVD featuring footage of the band playing the entire 'Cult Of The Dead' album in the band's rehearsal room plus interview clips.

The group embarked on a full European headlining tour in March 2009, hitting the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, UK, France, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria and Hungary. Their road mates on the "Full Of Hate 2009" trek comprised AMON AMARTH, OBITUARY, and KEEP OF KALESSIN
