Biography
Wroclaw extreme Black Metal act GRAVELAND arrived with the January 1992 demo session 'Necromanteion', June's 'Graveland' four song set and November 1992 follow up 'Drunemeton'. As GRAVELAND evolved the themes rose from primitive rawness to epic, ancestral fuelled bombast. Although the undoubted mentor behind the project is Rob Darken (a.k.a. Robert Fudali), who often appears in promotional photographs decked out in full feudal armour, notable contributors include drummer Capricornus ((Maciej Dabrowski) of CAPRICORNUS and THOR'S HAMMER along with bassist Grzegorz Jurgielewicz (a.k.a. 'Karcharoth').
Following on from the debuts, further demos were released titled 'Epilogue', distributed in January 1993 by Witching Hour Productions, 'In The Glare Of Burning Churches' in May 1993 and 'Celtic Winter', through Melissa Productions in 1994. With the band's heightening profile many of these demos were subsequently given a wider distribution, with Germany's No Colours Records issuing three tracks from 'Celtic Winter' as an EP in 1994 before re-issuing the entire set again on CD in 1996.
GRAVELAND's actual commercial debut would be with the 1994 album 'Carpathian Wolves' on the Eternal Devils label. These songs had been laid down at Radio PRO FM Studio in Opole between 26th April and 2nd May 1994 with engineer Andrzej Czubinski. Notably the track list sequence was printed incorrectly. Switching to Austrian imprint Lethal Records, GRAVELAND followed up in 1995 with 'Thousand Swords', recorded during December 1994 at Tuba Studio in Wroclaw with engineer Grzegorz Czachor. Isengard Productions re-issued 'Thousand Swords' that same year in new artwork. The demo 'In The Glare Of Burning Churches' was given a CD release in 1996, adding three tracks. GRAVELAND then cut two tracks for a demo cassette entitled 'Following The Voice Of Blood'. With the band's right wing politics now coming under scrutiny, the fact that ABSURD's frontman and convicted murderer Hendrik Möbus (a.k.a. Jarl Flagg Nidhögg) had penned the lyrics to the song 'White Hand's Power' only served to stoke controversy. No Colours then put out an album bearing the same title, also including 'White Hand's Power'.
Rob Darken would also hold down membership of INFERNUM, this in actuality being Karcharoth's venture under the pseudonym 'Anextiomarus', issuing the albums 'Forgotten Songs', 'Heralds Of Flight' and 'Rites Of The Valkyries' with his Celtic inspired Folk Metal solo venture LORD WIND. He also contributed to the debut VELES album 'Night On The Bare Mountain'.
GRAVELAND returned in 1998 with the album 'Immortal Pride', this album, featuring the mammoth 23 minute track 'Sons Of Fire And Steel - Outro (Servants Of War)', marking Darken's switch in pace towards Viking Metal. A cassette EP, the Vlad Dracul themed 'Impaler's Wolves' issued in 1999 by Eastclan in Poland, was picked up for CD issue by No Colours. In 1999 No Colours put out a digipack version of 'Thousand Swords' in new artwork. This same album was re-released once more in 2001, with CD and vinyl variants featuring a fourth artwork variant. Meantime, Resistance Records paired GRAVELAND with HONOR for a split album billed 'Raiders Of Revenge'. The 'Creed Of Iron' album witnessed two variants, an English languahe edition published through No Colours Records and a Polish vocal version, dubbed 'Prawo Stali', put out on cassette and CD by Nawia Productions.
The 2001 GRAVELAND album 'Raise Your Swords' was issued in both English and Polish variants, the latter taking the title 'Prawo Stali'. The same year GRAVELAND would share a split album 'Raiders Of Revenge' release with HONOR for the Resistance label. A new GRAVELAND studio album, 'Memory And Destiny' was delivered by No Colours during 2002. That same year No Colours re-issued 'Carpathian Wolves', adding four extra 1993 era rehearsal tracks.
Vinland Winds Records put out a 2002 7" vinyl EP entitled 'Blood Of Heroes', this being imited to 1488 hand-numbered copies of which a highly collectable 88 were pressed on white vinyl. 'The Fire Of Awakening' album arrived in 2003.
Karcharoth apparently committed suicide on 7th May 2004.
Darken would unify himself with WOODTEMPLE's lyricist Garhard for October 2004's album 'Dawn Of Iron Blades'. Collaborating with Garhard once again, GRAVELAND recorded the album 'Fire Chariot Of Destruction' at Eastclan Force and DSP studios in late 2004 and into the following year. Released in October 2005, 'Fire Chariot Of Destruction' was also issued as a limited edition gatefold vinyl edition with three extra tracks. No Colours Records issued the album 'Will Stronger Than Death' in February 2007.
