Biography

Guitarist Bernie Marsden is most noted for his Bluesy, rich style that has graced many of WHITESNAKE's premier recordings. Marsden's debut act was titled SKINNY CAT in 1970 before he briefly joined UFO in 1972. His stint with UFO lasted until 1973 when, unable to make the deadline for a German tour, he was replaced by ex-SCORPIONS guitarist Michael Schenker.

Following UFO, Marsden settled down to session work including guitar parts for TEN YEARS AFTER's man CHICK CHURCHILL's 1973 solo album 'You And Me'. Marsden later formed WILD TURKEY with erstwhile JETHRO TULL bassist Glen Cornick, recording one album.

The guitarist toured extensively throughout Europe with WILD TURKEY before opting to team up with drummer COZY POWELL of BEDLAM in a new band titled HAMMER. The first line-up of HAMMER comprised Powell, Marsden, keyboardist DON AIREY, bassist Clive Chapman and vocalist Frank Aiello. Neil Murray was later to replace Chapman.

HAMMER did not release any vinyl product and split in 1975, leaving Marsden free to join BABE RUTH where he replaced original guitarist Alan Shacklock and recorded the 1975 album 'Stealin' Home' and 1977's 'Kid's Stuff'; the latter reuniting Marsden with Powell, Murray and Airey once more.

Marsden was to then featured on the PAICE ASHTON LORD album 'Malice In Wonderland'. In Munich, whilst recording a second unreleased PAICE ASHTON LORD album, Marsden met DEEP PURPLE vocalist DAVID COVERDALE and the seeds of WHITESNAKE were sown.

In downtime from WHITESNAKE Marsden released a Japanese solo album,'And About Time Too' in 1979. Featured were such guest musicians as CREAM"s JACK BRUCE on bass, WHITESNAKE colleagues drummer COZY POWELL, keyboard player JON LORD, bassist Neil Murray and drummer Ian Paice together with Simon Phillips and DON AIREY. Some of the tracks were co-written by one 'Bobby Dazzler'; actually a pseudonym for DAVID COVERDALE.

The guitarist released a further solo album, 'Look at me now' during a further period of inactivity in the otherwise hectic WHITESNAKE's schedule. Once more the recording sessions featured many notable names; including drummers Phillips, Powell and Paice, keyboard player Jon Lord and bassist Neil Murray.

Finally deciding to quit WHITESNAKE after a gruelling five years of consistent touring in May 1982, Bernie briefly rehearsed with BLITZKRIEG vocalist Brian Ross prior to forming a new solo vehicle, ALASKA, shortly after.

ALASKA portrayed more of an AOR side to Marsden and secured a record deal with Music For Nations. The band's initial line-up comprised of Marsden, ex MAGNUM and TRAPEZE keyboard player Richard Bailey, ex MARILLION and VOYAGER drummer John Marter, ex LAST FLIGHT vocalist Rob Hawthorn and bassist Brian Badhams, previously with RAINMAKER. However, ALASKA suffered from constant line-up fluctuations and released a mere two albums in 'Heart Of The Storm' and 'The Pack'.

By 1987 Marsden had formed MGM with his ex WHITESNAKE colleague Neil Murray, former TOTO vocalist BOBBY KIMBALL, one-time MARILLION drummer Jonathan Mover and ex WHITESNAKE and TRAPEZE guitarist Mel Galley. MGM was, however, shortlived.

1990 found Marsden producing Norwegian outfit PERFECT CRIME's debut 'Blonde On Blonde'.

During 1993 Marsden once more teamed up with Moody to perform some live shows, including the Bulldog bash, under the banner MOODY MARSDEN BAND. A MOODY MARSDEN BAND album was released, although not in Britain.

Marsden also turned up alongside his ex WHITESNAKE guitar partner MICKY MOODY and various members of American Southern Rock group DOC HOLLIDAY on the 1994 release by BORDERLINE, an album entitled 'Line Up' (Long Island LIR 0003).

Whilst RPM Records re-issued Bernie's first solo album 'And About Time Too' (RPM 152) with the addition of three bonus tracks in 'You And Me' plus live renditions of 'Who's Fooling Who' and 'Shakey Ground',

In the late 90's Marsden was back in the recording studio and on the live circuit teamed with Moody in an act cheekily dubbed THE SNAKES fronted by Norwegian JORN LANDE.

1996 had Marsden back with Moody and other WHITESNAKE refugees bassist Neil Murray and drummer COZY POWELL. The latter pair had recently been ousted from BLACK SABBATH and had just toured Europe with BLACK SABBATH frontman TONY MARTIN. However, the WHITESNAKE colleagues opted to found an act titled SAINTS AND SINNERS fronted by American vocalist JOHN WEST, previously with BADLANDS and ARTENSION. Nothing concrete came of this venture as Powell, Murray and West split off to undertake work on the drummer's next solo, project. Following this act the Moody / Marsden duo founded COMPANY OF SNAKES with ex-BAD COMPANY vocalist ROBERT HART. The guitar pairing stuck together for the "Classic Whitesnake" act M3 alongside Neil Murray once again and former BLACK SABBATH vocalist TONY MARTIN.

August of 2004 had the guitarist unveiling a new solo band comprising M3's Jimmy Copley on drums, John Gordon on bass and Dino Baptiste on keyboards. A new Blues album, given a working title of 'Stacks', would include covers of FREDDY KING and PERCY MAYFIELD standards plus a version of WHITESNAKE's 'Here I Go Again' sung by Sharon Watson.
