Biography
The HUGHES TURNER PROJECT was a union of two of the most highly regarded vocalists in the Rock world. Both American JOE LYNN TURNER and the British born GLENN HUGHES cite membership credentials with DEEP PURPLE. Turner also fronted RAINBOW and MOTHER'S ARMY whilst Hughes has lent his vocals to TRAPEZE, BLACK SABBATH and GARY MOORE. The two singers also pursue active solo careers.
The debut album emerged in February of 2002. Former WHITESNAKE and THIN LIZZY guitarist JOHN SYKES contributes to the track 'Heaven's Missing An Angel' whilst PAUL GILBERT of MR. BIG and RACER X sessions on 'You Can't Stop Rock n' Roll'. Japanese dates to promote the album were announced for May. Joining Hughes and Turner would be the Japanese trio of PRECIOUS guitarist Akira Kajityama, keyboard player Toshio Egawa from EARTHSHAKER and famed Progressive Rock trio GERARD along with EARTHSHAKER and GRACIAS drummer Yoshihiro Kudo. Dates in Japan would be recorded for a live album. As well as performing tracks from the debut project album the set naturally included renditions of tunes from the singers illustrious past including DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW and BLACK SABBATH.
The band would tour Europe extensively throughout September supported by DOMAIN and KELLY SIMONZ BLIND FAITH. The band line up for these shows would comprise of Hughes, Turner and three Swedish musicians, ex-SPELLBOUND guitarist J.J. MARSH, the YNGWIE MALMSTEEN credited keyboard player Joakim Svalberg and drummer Tomas Broman, the latter a veteran of HUMANIMAL, GREAT KING RAT, AMAZE ME and the ELECTRIC BOYS.
However, before these dates both Hughes and Turner would join up with THE VOICES OF CLASSIC ROCK cast in late July for gigs in Japan, Korea, and even the Indian Ocean Island of Diego Garcia.
A live album was culled from the Japanese HUGHES TURNER PROJECT shows. Issued in various formats globally, strangely the European version omitted Hughes version of BLACK SABBATH's 'No Stranger To Love'. The success of the debut followed through into a second studio recording, this 2003 outing seeing guitarists STEVE VAI and JEFF KOLLMAN as special guests with the regular team of guitarist J. J. Marsh, keyboard player Ed Roth and drummer Shane Gaalaas.
Japanese shows in February of 2004 had Hughes and Turner joined by guitarist Akira Kajiyama, keyboard player Toshio Egawa with Yoshihiro Kudo on the drums. Following Russian and Turkish shows, including the Moscow 'Heroes Of Fate' festival, he duo got back on the road in Europe shortly after, kicking off in Athens, Greece on 1st March. During October both GLENN HUGHES and JOE LYNN TURNER featured in an unusual collaboration, working with producer Alexander Berezhny to record songs for a Russian album release of songs penned by Moscow mayor Mikhail Men.
