Biography

Born Peter Baker on 19th August 1939 in Lewisham, Ginger Baker had been the drummer for BLUES INCORPORATED and the GRAHAM BOND ORGANISATION before finding fame with CREAM.

Baker is regarded in wide circles as the archetypal Rock drummer and, following the break up of CREAM, Baker later formed the successful but short-lived BLIND FAITH in 1969 with former CREAM colleague Eric Clapton.

In 1970 the skinsman assembled GINGER BAKER'S AIRFORCE with guitarist Denny Laine (later to find greater fame with WINGS), ex ROSSETTA HIGHTOWER bassist Ric Grech, keyboard player Graham Bond, saxophonist Harold McNair and percussionist Remi Kabaka. Guitarist Steve Winwood of TRAFFIC guested on the debut album.

A further line up of AIRFORCE had the drummer working with ex GRIFFIN members keyboard player Kenny Craddock and bassist Colin Gibson. The latter joining SNAFU in 1974.

1971 found Baker relocated in Nigeria and playing with the African band SALT and noted musician FELA RANSOME-KUTI. Following the release of the 'Africa Live' album Baker took a few years sabbatical.

Returning once more, Baker formed the BAKER-GURVITZ ARMY with ex THREE MAN ARMY / GUN members Adrian Gurvitz (guitar) and Paul Gurvitz (bass) adding erstwhile SHARKS vocalist Snips and former SEVENTH WAVE keyboardist Peter Lemer in 1975. Lemer, however, quit in October 1975.

Baker went solo once more, prior to forming ENERGY in 1980 with guitarists John Mizarolli and Mike Davis and bassist Henry Thomas.

was to then join both ATOMIC ROOSTER and HAWKWIND for short spells before retiring to Italy. He couldn't resist the lure of Rock n' Roll and was to re-emerge in 1982 with GINGER BAKER AND BAND, comprising vocalist / guitarist Doug Brockie and bassist Karl Hill. In 1985 the drummer recorded the 'Album' opus for PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED prior to working with the renowned RAVI SHANKAR. Still exploring ethnic music, Baker also formed AFRICAN FORCE with a collection of African musicians.

1992 found the drummer in collusion with noted Swedish musicians. For the 'Unseen Rain' album Baker worked with noted Jazz bassist Jonas Hellborg and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN / STRATOVARIUS keyboard player Jens Johansson.

In more recent years Ginger has formed BBM with ex THIN LIZZY guitarist GARY MOORE and old CREAM cohort JACK BRUCE in 1993 as well as having recorded and toured with the American Metal band MASTERS OF REALITY, with whom he played on the 'Sunrise On The Sufferbus' album.

Later years have seen Baker exploring Jazz Rock with his GINGER BAKER TRIO, beginning with 1994's 'Going Back Home' album recorded with POWERTOOL / NAKED CITY guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Charlie Haden. This trio also stuck together for the 'Falling Off The Roof' album.

On tour in Denver Baker's attention was drawn to Jazz men trumpeter Ron Mills and bassist Artie Moore. Relocating to Colorado Baker drafted the pair in to create a new band DENVER JAZZ QUINTET TO OCTET. Their debut came with the 'Coward Of The County' album, recorded with local Denver musicians including guitarist Todd Ayers and steel guitar player Glenn Taylor.
