Biography
A Traditional British Metal band hailing from Walthamstow in London, ELIXIR gained a reputation for dogged perseverance for both themselves and manager Seymour Mincer. ELIXIR personified the NWoBHM movement delivering back to basics, catchy Heavy Metal. ELIXIR first got together in November 1983 with original female lead vocalist Sally Pike. The band, initially going under the titles of PURGATORY and HELLFIRE, was assembled by the Dobbs sibling rhythm section of bassist Kevin and drummer Nigel along with guitarist Steve Bentley and erstwhile HGV and STRATUS guitarist Phil Denton.
A demo was recorded at Bark Studios in Walthamstow. Within the space of just two gigs, both held at The Green Man in Stratford, Pike had departed to join the short-lived All-Girl Rock troupe SWEET 16 and was replaced by ex-MIDAS man Paul Taylor prior to the band's three track 1984 demo, also crafted at Bark Studios, comprising 'Dead Man's Gold', 'Born Loser' and 'Deal With The Devil'. Norman Gordon Haze replaced Bentley in November 1984. With Taylor ensconced ELIXIR debuted their new look line up in January of 1985 at a gig supporting TOKYO BLADE.
In 1986 the group self-financed both single, 'Treachery - Ride Like The Wind', and album 'The Son Of Odin' releases, recorded at The Lodge Studios in Clare, Suffolk, although the band suffered the loss of bassist Kevin Dobbs, who left in mid 1987. He was replaced by ex-SCHUTT and JOKER bassist Mark White. The ousted Dobbs siblings duly forged SARATOGA, working with ex-MASTER vocalist Rob Angell and the guitar team of Brad Williams and Pete Lynskey. Demos were recorded in November 1989.
Meantime, ELIXIR briefly boasted among the ranks former IRON MAIDEN drummer Clive Burr, with whom they recorded the 'Lethal Potion' album, but he had departed by the time of its release and his place was taken by ex-SWEET SAVAGE drummer Steve Hughes. However, ELIXIR folded during 1990.
After ELIXIR's demise frontman Paul Taylor formed the 1990 act ENGLISH ELECTRIC and subsequently HAIR OF THE DOG with ex TREASON guitarist Cullen Reavley in 1991. Taylor later reunited with Norman Gordon in BEGGARS, THIEVES AND MADMEN as well as operating the Blues act COLD TOWN. This latter act included another ELIXIR refugee guitarist Phil Denton. Gordon had been busying himself on the live circuit with Pop act VOX NOUVEAX, Rockers EMERALD DOGS and covers act SKYWALKER. Hughes subsequently returned with Birmingham's RATTLESNAKE KISS then ADRENALIN KICK.
Quite incredibly ELIXIR rose from the ashes in August of 2001 with plans set for recording of a new album 'The Idol'. Meantime 'The Son Of Odin' would be re-issued by the Cult Metal Classics label complete with three extra tracks in 'Chariot Of The Gods', 'Winds Of Time' and a live version of 'Treachery'. The band returned again during 2003, announcing their participation in the retro-Metal 'Keep It True II' held on 10th April at the Tauberfrankenhalle in Lauda-Königshofen, Germany alongside SATAN, MANILLA ROAD, HALLOWEEN, PARADOX and MAJESTY.
During 2005 ELIXIR collaborated with musicians from Polish group CRYSTAL VIPER on a cover version of CIRITH UNGOL's 'Chaos Rising' for inclusion on the Solemnity Music tribute album 'One Foot in Fire'.
March of 2006 found ELIXIR announcing a new recording contract with Majestic Rock Records for the album 'Mindcreeper'.
