Biography
During BLACK SABBATH's mid 80s fragile years, bassist and band co-founder Geezer Butler (a.k.a. Terence Michael Butler) pursued the formation of his solo band, the line-up for the GEEZER BUTLER BAND. An initial set of demos would be recorded with the controversial BLACK SABBATH related singer Jeff Fenholt. Yet more sessions were then cut in St. Louis with David Donato, of WHITE TIGER and also famously a brief occupant of the BLACK SABBATH vocal position, laying down vocals. The GEEZER BUTLER BAND of 1985 included guitarist Pedro Howse, vocalist Richie Callison, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and drummer John Mee. A later line-up had ex-BIRD OF PREY vocalist Kyle Michaels fronting the band, later of MASI. Former WISHBONE ASH and TRAPEZE vocalist Mervyn Spence had been approached but declined.
A more stable version of the band would be fronted by the PERSIAN RISK, TREDEGAR and TOKYO BLADE credited singer Carl Sentance. Although Sentance fronted the band for a two year period, no commercial recordings beyond demos were released. Employed on guitar as 1987 drew to a close would be Connecticut native JIMI BELL, actually located via selection process for auditions for OZZY OSBOURNE's band. These auditions narrowed down to two candidates, with ZAKK WYLDE pitched against Bell. Although Wylde scored the gig, Bell's compensation would be to diverted off into another branch of the BLACK SABBATH family tree, joining bassist Geezer Butler's band. Here he wrote the track 'Master Of Insanity', subsequently used, but unaccredited, on BLACK SABBATH's 1992 'Dehumanizer' album.
The guitarist's next move would be to join respected German Rockers THUNDERHEAD for their 'Ugly Side' record. Following the album release THUNDERHEAD toured Europe in partnership with METAL CHURCH. This connection resulted in a switch to METAL CHURCH vocalist David Wayne's WAYNE project.
Sentance was to later join MONROE, based in Germany, prior to a return to Wales and a stint with TOKIO ROSE. Travelling to North America next, the singer formed GHOST with the LONE STAR, UFO and WAYSTED credited guitarist PAUL CHAPMAN. The singer actually reformed PERSIAN RISK in Florida with American guitarist Mark Lanoue and drumming compatriot Fred Wendal where the band gigged until their demise in 1993. Sentance then fronted Atlanta act PSYCHO CIRCUS until 1995. Another former GEEZER BUTLER BAND singer, Richie Callison, was to be found post millennium fronting up HEAD EAST.
Geezer Butler served a tenure with OZZY OSBOURNE's solo band and rejoined BLACK SABBATH for the 'Dehumanizer' 1992 opus. Gaps in BLACK SABBATH's schedule saw a resurrection of sorts of Butler's solo ambitions, re-uniting with guitarist Pedro Howes once again to issue albums accredited to G//Z/R 'Plastic Planet' in 1995 fronted by FEAR FACTORY's Burton C. Bell, GEEZER, 1997's 'Black Science', and GZR, 2005's 'Ohmwork'.
Sentance returned in 2006 fronting the POWER PROJECT with the 'Dinosaurs' album. This Anglo / American quartet comprised seasoned players of high repute with delegated to QUIET RIOT's Carlos Cavazo, the DOKKEN and DIO credited Jeff Pilson on bass and BLACK SABBATH and DIO man Vinny Appice on drums. The singer would also head up the XXX BAND.
Former singer Richie Callision issued a solo single, 'Wrong Place, Wrong Time', in March 2009.
