Biography
Solo outings from Derek Sherinian, a man who has made his mark as session man for KISS, touring musician for ALICE COOPER (who dubbed the musician the "Caligula of keyboards") and member of DREAM THEATER. Sherinian, a native of Laguna Beach, California, witnessed his first steps into a musical career at age just 5, getting to grips with the family piano. High school then led to a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. His first involvement with a band would be the 1978 combo SMOKE.
Returning to California, Sherinian was invited to form up a band with drummer Buddy Miles from JIMI HENDRIX's Band Of Gypsies. However, this project would be curtailed when his erstwhile Berklee colleague guitarist Al Pitrelli invited him to audition for ALICE COOPER. Sherinian got the gig and, commencing in November of 1989, put in over 250 shows promoting the high profile 'Trash' album. He would stay with Cooper for the following 'Hey Stoopid' 1991 world trek before jumping ship to KISS. Recommended by drummer Eric Singer, he adopted the role of offstage keyboard player for the 'Revenge' global tour, as such performing on the subsequent 'Alive III' opus. The keyboard player's next move would also prove fortuitous, after a successful audition in New York landing the gig with DREAM THEATER for their 'Awake' tour of October 1994. DREAM THEATER would remain his base of operation for four years, performing on three albums and two worldwide tours.
Breaking free of DREAM THEATER Sherinan assembled the 1999 a solo album project dubbed 'Planet X' with Australian drummer Virgil Donati, from SOUTHERN SONS and DUNGEON (and also paradoxically DREAM THEATER tribute band THEATER OF DREAMS!) along with guitarist Brett Garsed of NELSON. This union bowed in with the album produced for ProgRock specialists Magna Carta Records. Pulling together a band unit to tour the record under the group title of PLANET X drew in noted guitarist TONY McALPINE for the 2000 follow up 'Universe'. The 2001 'Inertia' album, the first simply credited as a solo artist, sees guest appearances from OZZY OSBOURNE and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY guitarist ZAKK WYLDE, violinist Jerry Goodman from the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, bassist TONY FRANKLIN and the TOTO pairing of guitarist STEVE LUKATHER and drummer Simon Phillips.
Sherinian would also utilise his talents with the all star Progressive Rock union of PLATYPUS. Sherinan would team up with Swedish guitar maestro YNGWIE MALMSTEEN for September 2001 South American dates. Sherinian would also be operational with yet another act entitled JUGHEAD in alliance with KING'S X and PLATYPUS man TY TABOR and the sibling rhythm section of Matt and Gregg Bissonette.
2002 witnessed a further PLANET X album entitled 'Moonbabies'. Sherinian would contribute keyboard parts to YNGWIE MALMSTEEN's album 'Attack' that same year, the Swedish guitar maestro duly reciprocating appearing on the keyboard player's own record. Other contributing guest names numbered performers such as OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist ZAKK WYLDE, Al DiMeola, BILLY SHEEHAN, TONY FRANKLIN, TOTO drummer Simon Phillips and FOREIGNER drummer Brian Tichy. Sherinian also found the time in his hectic schedule to ally himself with former LION'S SHARE singer Andy Engberg and Norwegian guitarist TORBEN ENVOLDSEN's new project band entitled SECTION A. The project also featuring VANDEN PLAS drummer Andreas Lill.
On the live front the keyboard player joined up with BILLY IDOL for his North American Summer 'Kiss The Skull' tour. He would also renew his relationship with KISS, being drafted for a studio cover version of THE RAMONES 'Do You Remember Rock n' Roll Radio?' for the tribute record 'We're A Happy Family'.
An April 2003 album 'Black Utopia' was assembled with the aid of a lengthy guest list incorporating guitarists YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, AL DiMEOLA, ZAKK WYLDE and STEVE LUKATHER, bassists BILLY SHEEHAN and TONY FRANKLIN with TOTO's Simon Phillips and ex-FOREIGNER man Brian Tichy. For North American road work in June Sherinan pulled together a live band comprising guitarist TONY MACALPINE, former STEVE VAI band bassist Philip Bynoe and ex-JOE SATRIANI and GTR drummer Jonathan Mover.
Sherinian hooked up with the BILLY IDOL band for US touring through August and October of 2003 and also sessioned on the HOUSE OF LORDS 'Power And The Myth' album. By the close of the year was forming up a new band unit with partner Brian Tichy, former drummer for OZZY OSBOURNE, FOREIGNER and PRIDE & GLORY.
April of 2004 had Sherinian in Japan, backing the THIN LIZZY and WHITESNAKE guitar hero JOHN SYKES. A 2005 solo album, entitled 'Mythology', witnessed a plethora of guest performances including JOHN SYKES on the track 'God Of War', ZAKK WYLDE, not only donating his distinctive guitar tones but also penning lyrics and scoring vocals to the track 'The River Run', bassists TONY FRANKLIN and Marco Mendoza, drummer Simon Phillips and STEVE LUKATHER.
Sherinian ensconsed himself in the studio once again in January 2006. Participating guests on his fifth album, 'Blood Of The Snake', saw the return of Brian Tichy, ZAKK WYLDE, both singing and playing guitar on 'Man With No Name', Simon Phillips and STEVE LUKATHER, VELVET REVOLVER plus BILLY IDOL, ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash and John Petrucci of DREAM THEATER. Lead single, a cover of the British Pop classic 'In the Summertime', originally by MUNGO JERRY, featured both BILLY IDOL and Slash.
In April Derek rejoined the ranks of YNGWIE MALMSTEEN's touring band.
Derek Sherinian announced plans to form a Progressive Metal band in January 2009. Meantime, his next solo album featured guitarist Zakk Wylde, bassist Tony Franklin, drummers Brian Tichy, Virgil Donati and Rusty Cooley on the February released set entitled 'Molecular Heinosity'.
