Biography
The man who put the Metal edge into ex GENERATION X singer BILLY IDOL's biggest hits, Steve Stevens had been part of a recording group in the Bahamas based at Compass Point Studios called THE FINEMALIBUS in the early 80's. Through a link with producer Vini Poncia Stevens contributed to the 'Let Me Rock You' album from former KISS drummer PETER CRISS.
In addition to his work with Billy Idol, Stevens also recorded with on a solo album from CARS man Ric Ocasek, the 'Top Gun' soundtrack with Harald Faltermeyer and Pop act the THOMPSON TWINS. Stevens also supplied guitar to the MICHAEL JACKSON track 'Dirty Diana'.
In 1988 Steve formed his ATOMIC PLAYBOYS around a studio band that boasted ex WARRIOR vocalist Parramore McCarty and one-time SCANDAL and PRICE/SULTON drummer Thommy Price who, along with keyboard player Phil Ashley, had played with Stevens in the BILLY IDOL band. The album artwork was courtesy of H.R. Giger of 'Alien' fame.
The liaison was brief as McCarty split, Stevens later teaming up for an equally short-lived stint with MÖTLEY CRÜE vocalist VINCE NEIL after working with ex HANOI ROCKS vocalist MICHAEL MONROE.
The guitarist with ex FRANK ZAPPA and MISSING PERSONS drummer Terry Bozzio and KING CRIMSON bassist Tony Levin on an album project 'Black Light Syndrome' on Magna Carta Records in 1998. Stevens was reported to be working on, of all things, a flamenco guitar record and was expected to tour in Japan with the Japanese artist Himuro. He also worked on soundtrack music to the movies 'Dogtown' and 'The Big Brass Ring'.
STEVE STEVENS released a 2000 solo album 'Flamenco A Go Go' and later reunite with BILLY IDOL for a reworking of SIMPLE MINDS 'Don't You Forget About Me' for Idol's 'Greatest Hits' package. As 2001 dawned it would appear Idol and Stevens were busying themselves on a new band project.
