Biography
A Los Angeles liaison forged after both main players, vocalist John Corabi and guitarist Bruce Kulick, were unceremoniously dumped by MÖTLEY CRÜE and KISS respectively. The pair (who were introduced by MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx) began working with songwriter buddy Curt Cuomo on tunes, with the result being the release of UNION's debut album in the spring of 1998. Joining in would be erstwhile WILD ULTRA WILD and EDDIE MONEY bassist Jamie Hunting, also a man with credits on pre-production work for DAVID LEE ROTH.
Recorded at Rumbo Studios in Los Angeles and co-produced by Kulick, Corabi and Cuomo, the album closes on a poignant note with the Corabi composed 'Robin's Song', a track written as an 'unsent letter' to the singer's ex-girlfriend following the ending of their relationship.
Kulick guested on GRAHAM BONNET's 'The Day I Went Mad' album in 1999.
Jamie Hunting formed a project act titled THE OUTPATIENCE with VON GROOVE's Mike Shotten and guitarist Joey Hunting for the Japanese released album 'Anxious Disease'. Drummer Brent Fitz, veteran of Canadian act SEVENTH HEAVEN, also deputised for GILBY CLARKE and BULLETBOYS. Meantime, Kulick toured a side project throughout Europe in 2000 titled SHAMELESS featuring vocalist Steve Summers, bassist Alexx Michael and drummer Harry Bitchoff.
Corabi surprised many by temping for RATT in 2000 as a guitarist. Meantime Kulick created his own outfit AUDIODOG and joined GRAND FUNK RAILROAD as touring guitarist. Mid 2001 found both Hunting and Fitz joining the VINCE NEIL band for American dates although by late August Hunting had bailed out in acrimonious circumstances. The bassist would rejoin the VINCE NEIL band in time for a gig in Buenos Aires, Argentina during September, coincidentally just as UNION regrouped to play the same city.
BRUCE KULICK had a close shave on 16th October, being shot in the leg. Apparently a 21-year-old man got into an argument inside the Rainbow Bar & Grill at about 1:20 a.m., grabbed a gun from his car and shot from Sunset Boulevard into a crowd at the club's patio area, injuring Kulick and one other man. Another bullet grazed his head. Fortunately Kulick was released from hospital shortly after.
February of 2003 witnessed Hollywood rumours suggested John Corabi was rehearsing up a new band unit working alongside erstwhile ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist JERRY CANTRELL and Billy Duffy of THE CULT and drummer Josh Howser. This outfit, dubbed CARDBOARD VAMPYRES, debuted live on 12th April at the Troubadour club in Los Angeles, at a benefit for the Sweet Relief musicians charity organization. UNION, comprising the original line up of Corabi, Kulick, Hunting and Fitz, announced a batch of reformation shows in Japan for late January 2005. However, with Fitz unable to make the dates KISS drummer Eric Singer stepped in as replacement. Support bands for the shows would be KISS tribute acts KISS DOLLS, KISSIN' TIME and KISS JAPAN. The success of these shows prompted a reformation of Eric Singer's E.S.P. band for European dates in April, with Singer and Kulick being joined by John Corabi and the DIO and ALICE COOPER credited bassist Chuck Garric.
A 2005 UNION DVD 'Do Your Own Thing Live!', released by Creative Worx Entertainment, included the previously unreleased song 'Walking In Your Sleep'. John Corabi would also make his presence felt on the soundtrack to the Horror movie 'Scarlet Fry's Junkfood Horrorfest', starring ALICE COOPER's daughter Calico. The contributed track, 'Psycho Fighter', featured ALICE COOPER band members guitarist Ryan Roxie, bassist Chuck Garrick and drummer Tommy Clufetos. Kulick also featured as guest player on Italian singer CHRIS CATENA's 2005 solo album 'Discovery - Return of the Galactic Freakboy' and on Finnish Heavy Metal band LORDI's 'The Arockalypse' opus.
UNION, seeing Chuck Garric of DIO and ALICE COOPER on bass and CINDERELLA's Fred Coury on drums, conducted European dates across Switzerland, Germany, the UK, Denmark and Spain in December. Brent Fitz joined ALICE COOPER's live band in July 2006. Both Corabi and Kulick featured on the VAN HALEN song 'Hot For Teacher' included on the tribute album '80s Metal Tribute To Van Halen' released by Deadline Records in September 2006. In October Corabi vocalised on cover version of the JOURNEY classic 'Girl Can't Help It' featured on the Cleopatra Records homage collection '80s Metal Tribute To Journey'.
John Corabi put in a one off performance fronting THE BIG BALL STARS, alongside vocalist ROBIN McAULEY, of McAULEY SCHENKER GROUP, FAR CORPORATION and SURVIVOR, drummer Chris Slade, of URIAH HEEP and AC/DC, keyboard player Teddy Zig-Zag, of GUNS 'N ROSES, plus the RATT credited Robbie Crane on bass and Brent Woods from the VINCE NEIL band, in a live set on January 27th 2007 at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood, California.
