Biography
An all-girl Hard Rock band, VIXEN first appeared in the early eighties formed by guitarist Jan Kuehnemund and statuesque Alaskan born frontwoman Janet Gardner. An early incarnation of the Los Angeles based band had first made their mark with a 1983 EP issued by Word Records, the VIXEN line-up at this juncture being Gardner, Kuehnemund, bass player Liza Carbe, rhythm guitarist Tamara Ivanova and drummer Laurie Hedlund. VIXEN also featured on the soundtrack of the 1984 movie 'Hardbodies', donating six songs 'Computer Madness', 'Maria', 'Be With Me', 'Mr. Cool', 'Give It a Chance' and 'Runnin'. By the time of recording these tracks Carbe had been supplanted by Pia 'Koko' Maiocco, girlfriend of renowned guitarist STEVE VAI.
With a far glitzier image than other successful girl groups ever possessed, VIXEN offered melodic, commercial Rock and would eventually be signed by EMI's Manhattan label in the Summer of 1987. The band had added erstwhile MADAM X drummer Roxy Petrucci and parted company with Pia Koko by this time, who would eventually marry Steve Vai, her replacement was Share Pederson.
The VIXEN debut album proved to be very popular world-wide, attaining gold sales status in North America, spawning the RICHARD MARX and FEE WAYBILL penned hit single 'Edge Of A Broken Heart' whilst JEFF PARIS supplied the track 'Cryin''. Following the record hitting retail, VIXEN toured opening for BILLY IDOL, the SCORPIONS and as a package with OZZY OSBOURNE and WHITE LION before the girls appeared at the Milton Keynes Bowl in August 1989 on a bill headlined by BON JOVI. German audiences found the female foursome most amusing on a support tour to DEEP PURPLE as VIXEN is an close phonetic match for the German word for 'Wanker' ('Wixer').
However, with a global fan base built upon the achievements of the debut the 1990 album 'Rev It Up', with a title track penned by KEEL frontman Ron Keel, strangely saw label support ebbing. Share Pederson became involved in the Los Angeles 'supergroup' project CONTRABAND that also involved the legendary German UFO guitarist Michael Schenker, SHARK ISLAND vocalist Richard Black, L.A. GUNS guitarist Tracii Guns, RATT drummer Bobby Blotzer. The project had evolved from an MTV 'Unplugged' session involving both VIXEN and RATT alongside a guesting Schenker. An album was recorded for the EMI subsidiary label Impact before the whole thing dissolved.
After the demise of the band, Roxy Petrucci teamed up with her sister Maxine once more in the all-girl HELL'S BELLES. The band was completed by vocalist LENITA ERICKSON and bassist Irene Wohlman. Despite some impressive shows, HELL'S BELLES would split leaving Erickson to pursue a solo career. During 1991 Gardner and Pederson could be found on the California club circuit touting a band entitled NOBODY YOU KNOW, a short lived collaboration with the AEROSMITH credited Thom Gimbel on keyboards and drummer Steve Klong. The band demoed for Geffen Records but progressed no further. Meantime, Jan Kuehnemund and Roxy Petrucci worked on new material with JACKIE EYNON and bassist Amy Ruhl in a band unit billed as BOMBSHELL. Pedersen duly formed THE EXS in 1993. Petrucci went on to work with CHRISSY STEELE in 1994, ex-FEMME FATALE singer Lorraine Lewis the following year then, in 1996, with ex-PHANTOM BLUE guitarist Michelle Meldrum.
VIXEN reformed in 1997 with original members Janet Gardner and Roxy Petrucci being joined by ex-POISON DOLLYS and ENVY guitarist Gina Stile. Prior to this reformation Petrucci and Stile, along with ex-CHERRY BOMB vocalist JEANNINE ST. CLAIR, had demoed.
The resulting VIXEN album, 'Tangerine' featuring Mike Pisculli on bass, although a welcome return, found the group struggling for a direction, attempting Grunge one minute and coming off like a Lounge band the next. Live work saw former PHANTOM BLUE member Rana Ross on bass duties.
Pederson, now renamed Share Ross, returned to the limelight with a new heavily tattooed look with pink hair fronting BUBBLE. Joining the girl for their 2000 'How 'Bout This?' album was the ex-FASTER PUSSYCAT duo of guitarist Brent Muscat and bassist Erik Stacy with former DOGS D'AMOUR drummer Bam. Kuehnemund meanwhile busied herself with two projects POPULATION 361 and DRAWING DOWN THE MOON.
VIXEN reformed in 2001 with Gardner, Kuehnemund and Petrucci joined by bass player Pat Holloway. However, this much vaunted reunion soon fractured leaving Kuhnemund to assemble an all new look VIXEN. Joining the guitarist would be vocalist Jenna Piccolo, ARMADILLO SANDWICH band bass player Lynn Louise Lowrey and drummer Kathryn Kraft. The revised band got straight into road action by joining the bill of the summer 'Voices Of Metal' festival package including VINCE NEIL, STEPHEN PEARCY'S RATT, BRITNY FOX and SLAUGHTER. Rana Ross, having founded SINBOY, passed away on 3rd May 2003 due to liver failure. She was just 34 years old.
Former VIXEN personnel and vocalist Janet Gardner, guitarist Gina Stile and drummer Roxy Petrucci would be working on a V3 band project in early 2004. Petrucci would also be working up a further project with sister Maxine dubbed TITANIA. Songs worked up in October saw a special guest appearance by former MR. BIG and DAVID LEE ROTH bassist BILLY SHEEHAN.
With both VIXEN albums being re-issued by EMI in November the band's original members, Janet Gardner, Jan Kuehnemund, Share Pedersen and Roxy Petrucci would all appear together for a televesion special on VH1's 'Bands Reunited' show. Kuehnemund's DRAWING DOWN THE MOON project issued their debut album, 'Angel In My Dream', in November 2004.
The reformed VIXEN partnered with GIRLSCHOOL and DANTE FOX for headline UK dates in June of 2005. The line-up at this juncture comprised Jan Kuehnemund, singer Jenna Sanz-Agero, bassist Lynn Louise Lowrey and drummer Kat Kraft. Meantime, ex-drummer Roxy Petrucci assembled an all new group with DAVID LEE ROTH band guitarist Brian Young and singer LENITA ERICKSON. Roxy also guested on sister MAXINE's solo album 'Titania'.
Early 2006 brought news that the a musical collaboration between Roxy Petrucci and FEMME FATALE singer Lorraine Lewis, having been first mooted during 1995, had evolved into the Orange County based ROKTOPUSS. Meantime, VIXEN themselves got back on the road, touring the USA in June alongside ENUFF Z'NUFF and Europe alongside HOUSE OF LORDS. Another round of European shows in December were followed up by supports to YNGWIE MALMSTEEN in Finland.
Demolition Records released VIXEN's 'Live & Learn' in the U.S.A on 30th January 2007, the first studio recording to feature founding VIXEN member and guitarist Jan Kuehnemund since 1990's 'Rev It Up'.
VIXEN members Janet Gardner, Roxy Petrucci and Share Pedersen convened during May 2008 to explore potential writing possibilities but this did not go any further than rehearsals.
