Biography
A Grunge era act, DIG was forged in San Diego, California during 1991. The band, named after band leader Scott Hackwith's dog, displayed more adventuristic tendencies than the genre type they were undoubtedly pooled in with, making a keen impression on live audiences and critics. Hackwith was joined in this endeavour by guitarists Jon Morris and Johnny Cornwell, bassist Phil Freidmann and drummer Anthony Smedile. They debuted with a June 1992 EP entitled 'Runt', recorded by Trent Statton at Red Zone Studios, on the Wasteland label. Hackwith's skills behind the desk were requested by the RAMONES, who used the DIG frontman to produce their 1993 album 'Acid Eaters'.
An eponymnous album, produced by Dave Jerden at Stagg Street Studios, also on Wasteland, arrived in August 1993. DIG found their profile raised by successful radio singles 'Believe', backed by a cover version of PINK FLOYD's 'Believe', and 'Unlucky Friend'. The former song also benefitted from a promotional video clip, which garnered steady MTV rotation. Radioactive Records then signed DIG for the 'Soft Pretzel' EP.
DIG supported the SMASHING PUMPKINS on UK dates in February 1994.That same year DIG featured on the 'Airheads' movie soundtrack with the previously unavailable song 'Curious George Blues'. In 1995 another unique track, 'Hu Hu Hu' on the soundtrack to the film 'Virtuocity. Yet another non-album cut, 'Fat Albert Theme', found its way onto the 'Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits' compilation.
Former WEIRDOS and THELONIUS MONSTER guitarist Dix Denney replaced Johnny Cornwell whilst Smedile was superseded by Matt Tecu prior to recording July 1996's 'Defenders Of The Universe'.
DIG, now a quartet minus Denney, returned with the 'Life Like' album in January 1999. For this effort Hackwith and Morris were joined by a fresh rhythm section comprising bassist Jay Nicholas and drummer Gene Trautmann. Joel Graves added guest guitar.
DIG, including Scott Hackwith, Jon Morris, and Johnny Cornwell, reunited in March 2004. Jamie Carter, of CAPRICORN and THE BARONS, was installed on bass.Former drummer Matt Tecu also re-enrolled for a concert at the Viper Room in Hollywood on 16th February 2006.
A brand new track, 'No One's There', was made available online in 2007. DIG for these sessions involved vocalist / guitarist Scott Hackwith, guitarists Jon Morris and Johnny Cornwell, bassist Pete Reichert (otherwise known as Petey X from ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT), with Dave Stedronsky on drums.
