Biography

LOVE/HATE took on a highly individualistic approach than most acts of their stable, their irreverent lyrics and leftfield imagery based on Budweiser and street graffiti fortunately backed up by some razorsharp songwriting. The band was assembled during 1985 by bass guitarist Skid (a.k.a. Chris), guitarist Jon E. Love and drummer Joey Gold, from a re-shuffled version of DATA CLAN, LOVE/HATE's early style, reflected in a number of excellent demos (some produced by RATT bassist Juan Croucier), ran towards a far more commercial direction than that which they embraced fans with once the quartet signed to Columbia Records in 1989.

The pre-LOVE/HATE act DATA CLAN had pursued a post New Wave, Techno direction. Although they had been courted by major labels, following a series of abortive showcases and a six week tour of Japan the group lost its original singer. New vocalist JIZZY PEARL was previously with JOSHUA and L.A. ROCKS (a forerunner of EYES) where he went under the name of Jim Wilkinson. During this period Skid earned a living selling bouquets of flowers on Los Angeles street corners. These formative stages would see Joey Gold and early member Rodney sharing drum and keyboard duties. A four track EP was recorded, promoted by a brief tour in Mexico in the autumn of 1985. In early 1986 the revised title of LOVE/HATE was adopted, switching from the Techno-Glam image to that of black trenchcoats and bolero hats.

Amongst the earliest LOVE/HATE demos were gems like 'Good Ship Dolly Rock' and 'Deal With Fate'. The Croucier demo reportedly cost in the region of $27,000 and comprised 'She's An Angel', 'My Girl', 'Why Do You Think They Call It Dope?', 'Soul House' and 'Cold On The Outside'. For a matter of weeks LOVE/HATE employed Tracy Grijalva as rhythm guitarist, later to come to fore as lead guitarist with DIO billed as Tracy G. The demo track 'She's An Angel' later appeared on the soundtrack album to the 'A Nightmare On Elm Street 4' movie in 1988.

In early 1988 a further demo, comprising 'Blackout In The Red Room', 'Tumbleweed' and 'Fuel To Run', combined with a regular Monday night residency at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go club, secured a deal with Columbia Records via David Kahne and Ron Oberman. LOVE/HATE was contracted on January 13th 1989 for a $100,000 advance.

LOVE/HATE scored critical acclaim with their energetic opening 1990 Tom Werman produced set 'Blackout In The Red Room' as the anthemic title track and boisterous 'Why Do You Think They Call It Dope' easily crossed over to mainstream radio appeal. The group's first wave of live promotion for the record came with an ill suited support slot to DIO but the next round of dates, guesting for AC/DC, found the band a ready audience. Jizzy Pearl especially endeared himself to the masses with a microphone stand constructed of Budweiser beer cans. The band's brashness and gung-ho spirit put them in the public's eye as contendors for major status, particularly in Europe.

The follow up, 1992's 'Wasted In America', gave the band significant sales, boosted by airplay success of both 'Wasted In America' and 'Evil Twin'. However, the first set of songs submitted by the band to Columbia had been rejected by the label, forcing a re-think for the band. LOVE/HATE relocated to New York, residing in a renovated gay bath-house, in order to cut their second album with producer Jon Jannson.

Upfront of the album Columbia released the 'Evil Twin' EP, promoted alonside a September 1991 European tour as support to SKID ROW. Much to the band's displeasure, 'Happy Hour' was chosen as the next single, backed up by a promotional video. Another round of high profile concerts on the European continent had LOVE/HATE supporting OZZY OSBOURNE as 'Wasted In America' hit number 20 on the UK charts. Another brief tour of Europe was conducted in April 1992, supported by TATTOOED LOVE BOYS. A set of UK gigs was cancelled when Pearl lost his voice. Back home in California, the singer made the national press by way of a novel publicity stunt, "crucifying" himself on a cross suspended from the Y in the 'Hollywood' landmark sign on the Los Angeles hills. Unfortunately, not enough in the way of hard sales in the USA was generated by 'Wasted In America' to prolong Columbia Records interest.

The act switched label's to RCA Records losing guitarist Jon E. Love in the process. His successor was the superior talent of DARREN HOUSEHOLDER. Although an accomplished virtuoso guitarist Householder sat ill at ease within the band's good time ethic and and the 1994 album 'Let's Rumble', actually financed by the sale of Skid's Corvette, struggled in America. Nevertheless, LOVE/HATE self-funded a nine week tour of the states. The song 'Spinning Wheel' gained momentum on radio but 'Let's Rumble's eventual US release, on Calibre Records, came long after the song had peaked. In the UK the band still fared well, a Music For Nations release of 'Let's Rumble' attaining a number 24 position on the UK charts.

1995 ended on a temporary high as the group joined the December 'Blind Guardian Christmas Party' tour, headed up by BLIND GUARDIAN and also boasting SKYCLAD, SAXON, RAGE and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. However, the band then drifted apart. Householder duly issued a solo album but unfortunately for LOVE/HATE it would all be downhill from this point on.

Love returned for the heavily criticized 'I'm Not Happy' opus. 1997's 'Livin' Off Layla', seeing BULLETBOYS singer Marq Torien handling a share of the lead vocals, did little to stop the rot and was a public demonstration of a band in crisis. Accounts emerged claiming Skid had titled the record as a well aimed jibe at Pearl's then girlfriend and executed the album cover to portray Jizzy as the Devil. Touring to promote the album found LOVE/HATE supporting DIO across North America throughout the Spring of 1998. By the 1999 album 'Let's Eat' the band was down to a duo of Pearl and Gold with Skid apparently deliberately excluded. Contributing musicians on an album made up of songs mostly dusted off from earlier years were guitarist Jon Jones, bassist Jeff Simon and session drummer Robbie Black.

During the late 90's Pearl was fronting L.A. GUNS for their 'Shrinking Violet' album. The singer also hooked up with SKID ROW as a try out but after rehearsals this proposed union led nowhere. Meantime, ex-guitarist Jon E. Love was touting an act entitled CROWN 57, featuring Mike Savage from PYGMY LOVE CIRCUS, Jeff Chambers of DANZIG and NOTHINGFACE, DEADLIGHTS and UNIDA bassist Jerry Chambers.

Jizzy Pearl joined RATT as vocalist following Stephen Pearcy's abrupt departure in 2000 but this tenure was fleeting. Pearl also re-founded LOVE/HATE with ex-L.A. GUNS men guitarist Johnny Crypt and bassist Chris Van Dahl. As 2002 broke it would be confirmed Pearl, alongside his RATT colleagues guitarist Keri Kelli and bass player Robbie Crane alongside ex-LIBERATORS drummer Dave Moreno, were resurrecting the LOVE/HATE tag once again for touring in the UK during April as guests to GILBY CLARKE. The band scheduled UK tour dates for May of 2004. That same year JIZZY PEARL's debut solo effort, 'Just A Boy', emerged.

During late 2005 it was revealed Pearl was fronting 100 PROOF, a band which comprised the internationally known cast comprising Stacey Blades from L.A. GUNS on guitar, Mike Duda of W.A.S.P. on bass and the veteran figure of the AC/DC, THE FIRM, STATUS QUO and URIAH HEEP credited Chris Slade on drums.

LOVE/HATE, featuring Jizzy Pearl, bass player Robbie Crane and drummer Dave Moreno, announced tour dates in Europe for April and May 2006, announcing the inclusion of BEAUTIFUL CREATURES and QUIET RIOT guitarist Alex Grossi substituting for Jon E. Love. However, a batch of US gigs did see the band with both guitarists onstage.

The classic LOVE/HATE lineup - vocalist Jizzy Pearl, guitarist Jon E. Love, bassist Skid Rose and drummer Joey Gold - reunited for the first time in over a decade to perform on February 24th 2007 at Club Vodka in Hollywood, California. The band played the 'Black Out In The Red Room" in its entirety.
