Biography
A Hardcore band from New England, BURY YOUR DEAD were originally conceived as a side project in 2001 for HAMARTIA members Slim B. (a.k.a. Brendan MacDonald, ex-EHNARE) and Mark Castillo (ex-PIECEMEAL). The first line-up would see guitarist Slim and drummer Castillo alongside the vocal pairing of Mark Hundley and Joe Krewko, with Jesse Viens on second guitar and Steve Kent on bass.
A 5 track demo was recorded before Hundley decamped. Further changes in personnel would take place before a somewhat settled line-up was established of Krewko, Slim, Castillo, guitarist Jay Crowe and ex-GROUNDZERO four-stringer Rich Casey. With this line-up BURY YOUR DEAD would undertake an East Coast tour to promote the self-financed 'Bury Your Dead' EP. A CD put out on Rich Casey's own Car Crash Audio label and consisting of the 5 songs from the demo. In the Spring of 2002, the band would sign with the German label Alveran Records before setting off on an extensive nationwide Summer tour.
Before the release of the debut album, 'You Had Me At Hello', Crowe and Casey would quit the band. Replacements were quickly recruited in the shape of guitarist Rich Gaccione of WHAT FEEDS THE FIRE and bassist Matt Lacasse from Black Metal combo THE YEAR OF OUR LORD. However, all was still not well in the BURY YOUR DEAD camp, and following a tour to promote the forthcoming album the band split in January 2003 and went their separate ways. Slim began playing with BLOOD HAS BEEN SHED and Castillo moved back to Philadelphia and toured with BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.
After a couple of months, and following an aborted re-union show in Rhode Island, BURY YOUR DEAD would get back together in March 2003. Initially, former band members Slim B. and Rich Casey would be joined by vocalist Mike Nunez and drummer Chris Sansone, with a second guitarist Dan O'Connor added soon after. Nunez however would quickly be replaced by Mat Bruso, who was the brother of Casey's girlfriend at the time. And it wasn't long before O'Connor and Sandsone would be out in favour of ex-REFLUX guitarist Eric Ellis and the return of original skinsman Mark Castillo.
Following an appearance at the influential 'Hellfest' hardcore festival in Syracuse, New York during July 2003, BURY YOUR DEAD were approached by Victory Records, eventually signing to the label later that year. In June 2004 the band would enter the Q-Division Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts with producer Matthew Ellard to record their second album 'Cover Your Tracks'. The album would have a rather bizarre concept in that all 12 songs, including the title track, were named after Tom Cruise movies!
With the new album released in October 2004, the band would film a promotional video for the song 'The Color Of Money' with director Dale Restighini in Irvington, New Jersey, before setting off on another extensive headlining US tour in November alongside SCARS OF TOMORROW and THE ACACIA STRAIN.
Having secured an exclusive production and distribution deal with Century Media Records in Europe, Alveran Records would re-issue BURY YOUR DEAD's debut album 'You Had Me At Hello' in December 2004. The band had their track 'Color Of Money' featured on the soundtrack to the 'Rainbow Six Lockdown' game issued by 3volution Productions.
The group opened 2005 with a major nationwide US tour backed by PREMONITIONS OF WAR, FULL BLOWN CHAOS and WALLS OF JERICHO through January and February. US touring in April had the group announcing a touring partnership with THE RED CHORD, A LIFE ONCE LOST and IF HOPE DIES. The group heightened their road profile further by hooking up with DEVILDRIVER, REMEMBERING NEVER, IF HOPE DIES and ARTIMUS PYLEDRIVER for the US 'Burning Daylight' tour in May.
BURY YOUR DEAD, now with Aaron Patrick (a.k.a. 'Bubble') on bass guitar, announced touring plans for the summer of 2006, kicking of the 'Sthress' tour in July alongside POISON THE WELL, IT DIES TODAY, HIMSA, DARKEST HOUR, SHADOWS FALL, SUFFOCATION, THROWDOWN and STILL REMAINS. The band then hopped onto the KORN headed 'Family Values' festivals on a bill including also DEFTONES, STONE SOUR, FLYLEAF, 10 YEARS, BULLETS AND OCTANE and DIR EN GREY.
The group teamed up with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and ALL THAT REMAINS for a number of US dates commencing November 9th at the Tremont Music Hall in Charlotte, North Carolina, with dates continuing through until December 20th at Lupo's at The Strand in Providence, Rhode Island. As the year closed vocalist Mat Bruso left the band. A statement revealed that Bruso had "decided that he has come to a point in his life where he must focus on more important things like going back to school to become a teacher and his upcoming marriage". Due to these circumstances, a previously announced European tour with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and THE HAUNTED was cancelled.
The group pulled in new singer Michael Crafter, who previously had fronted the Australian metal band I KILLED THE PROM QUEEN and mosh-core group CARPATHIAN. BURY YOUR DEAD headlined the 'Don't Call It A Comeback' tour beginning April 20th 2007 at the Montage Music Hall in Rochester, New York lasting into mid May. Support at the shows came from SUICIDE SILENCE, STICK TO YOUR GUNS and SINCE THE FLOOD. Myke Terry took over as lead singer as 2008 opened.
In February 2008 Milwaukee police arrested a 19 year-old man accused of being part of a "hammer and bat wielding mob" that attacked guitarist Eric Ellis after a BURY YOUR DEAD show supporting NONPOINT, MACHINE HEAD and HELLYEAH on the 'More Balls, More Volume, More Strength' tour. Ellis received a wound that required 19 stiches. In more positive news, the band's self-titled album sold over 4,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release in March 2008 to debut at no. 176 on The Billboard 200 chart. The album was again recorded at Florida's Audiohammer Studios with producer Jason Suecof.
BURY YOUR DEAD officially parted ways with Eric Ellis due to "medical reasons and personality differences" in August 2008. His replacement in the group would be former band mate Chris Towning, of SUFFOCATE FASTER, who began appearing in Ellis' place at shows in late March.
'It's Nothing Personal', the May 2009 album from BURY YOUR DEAD, sold around 3,250 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan, landing at no. 2 on the Top New Artist Albums Heatseekers chart
