Biography
Nu-Metal unit founded by Kansas City native frontman Wes Scantlin during the early 90s. PUDDLE OF MUDD, named after a famous local flooding, went through numerous line up changes before effectively folding in 1999. Scantlin, despite being the only member left, resolved to carry on regardless and managed to get a demo tape to LIMP BIZKIT's Fred Durst at the 'Family Values' festival. Before too long Durst had signed PUDDLE OF MUDD up to his own Flawless label and the search for a band was on.
New recruits were raised in the form of guitarist and Jacksonville, Florida raised Paul Phillips from Punk band HAPPY HOUR while Boston born bassist Doug Ardito was previously a member of CELLOPHANE. Recording commenced for the 'Come Clean' sessions with Josh Freese of THE VANDELS, GUNS N' ROSES and A PERFECT CIRCLE sessioning. Post recording drummer Greg Upchurch was enrolled. Upchurch had previously been a member of ELEVEN and SOUNDGARDEN's erstwhile vocalist CHRIS CORNELL's band featuring on his 'Euphoria Morning' album.
Touring throughout the summer of 2001 promoting the 'Come Clean' debut would see PUDDLE OF MUDD sharing billing with fellow Durst proteges STAIND and COLD. Later dates had PUDDLE OF MUDD hooked up with DEFTONES and GODSMACK.
Scantlin kept his media profile high in March of 2002 albeit in less than predicted circumstances when he and his fiancee Michelle Rubion were arrested after a public altercation on California's Highway 126. Charged with disturbing the peace, the pair were released on $20,000 bail each. PUDDLE OF MUDD would be confirmed as the special guests on KORN's summer American dates commencing June 20th in Philadelphia.
The band set to work on a new album billed as 'Life In Display' for 2003 release, once again employing the services of producer John Kurzweg. During September former MACHINE HEAD, SOULFLY and MEDICATION guitarist Logan Mader laid down guest sessions on the track 'Freak Of The World'.
Scantlin got back into the news for all the wrong reasons in February after he was arrested upon completing just four songs at a PUDDLE OF MUDD set in Toledo, Ohio. Announcing from the stage at the Headliners Bar that he was "Too fucked up" to play Scantlin, left alone on stage by the rest of his band, then abused the crowd and exchanged insults for nearly half an hour. The 1'500 strong crowd naturally turned ugly. Once in the dressing room the singer was taken to jail and charged with disorderly conduct-intoxication, criminal mischief and misconduct involving a public transportation system. Various media suggested the singer's erratic behaviour was as a direct result of being dumped by New Zealand supermodel Rachel Hunter.
