Biography
BRUTAL TRUTH, New York Grindcore exponents with a definite thirst for speed, would be created during a lull in NUCLEAR ASSAULT activities during 1990 when the distinctive figure of lanky, mop topped bassist Dan Lilker, previously with high profile Thrash outfit ANTHRAX and spoof offshoot act S.O.D., assembled a band to indulge his love of Hardcore. Recruiting guitarist Brent McCarty and drummer Scott Lewis the line-up was finalized with the addition of vocalist Kevin Sharp.
Early demo recordings made by the band whilst still a trio were issued on the bootleg EP 'The Birth Of Ignorance' on Liberated Records. In time, Lilker split from a flagging NUCLEAR ASSAULT to concentrate fully on BRUTAL TRUTH. With Lilker's pedigree a deal was quickly on the table and the band signed to grindcore exponents Earache Records for their debut October 1992 Colin Richardson produced effort 'Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses'. Opening with the 33 second burst of 'P.S.P.I.', BRUTAL TRUTH careered through the most ferocious Grindcore yet to be committed to tape, all punctuated by anti-capitalistic vitriol, disturbing narrative and industrial sound samples looted from an array of construction tools. A 1992 7 " single 'Ill Neglect' also saw the light of day featuring a raucous cover of THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS 'The Shah Sleeps In Lee Harvey's Grave'.
BRUTAL TRUTH paid their live dues in America opening for CATHEDRAL, CARCASS and NAPALM DEATH prior to guesting for FEAR FACTORY in Europe. During the tour Lewis departed and was supplanted by former NINEFINGER man Rich Hoak.
Pushing the boundaries of extremity even further BRUTAL TRUTH forged a liaison with Coventry techno act LARCENY to record theFebruary 1993 'Perpetual Conversion' 7", the B side of which featured a version of BLACK SABBATH's 'Lord Of This World'.
The October 1994 album 'Need To Control', again overseen by Colin Richardson and hosting a take on THE GERMS 'Media Blitz', was formatted uniquely enough to make an impact with it being a boxed set of 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 inch vinyl. Bonus cuts included CELTIC FROST's 'Dethroned Emperor' and PINK FLOYD's seminal 'Wish You Were Here'. Just as this album was being released Lilker was dabbling in another project titled EXIT 13, together with Lewis, and guesting on the 'No Matter What The Cause' album by Germans HOLY MOSES up front of a BRUTAL TRUTH tour encompassing Australia, Japan and America. European dates in April through to June 1994 saw the band packaged with MACABRE and Austria's PUNGENT STENCH.
The band, feeling that Earache Records did not have the necessary commitment, broke away from the label in search of another deal. It was to be a full two years before BRUTAL TRUTH signed up with American label Relapse Records. During this interim the quartet was far from inactive however contributing tracks to the 'Nothings Quiet On The Western Front' compilation and issuing split EPs with SPAZZ, complete with 'Rumours', originally by DIE KREUZEN, and MELVINS, the latter boasting the MELVINS cover version 'Zodiac'. Another 1996 Relapse EP, 'Machine Parts', involved five different live recordings of 'Collateral Damage' fronted up by EXIT 13's Bill Yurkiewicz and NAPALM DEATH's Barney Greenaway.
BRUTAL TRUTH's third full-length, 'Kill Trend Suicide' issued in October 1996, was laid down at the Cutting Room in New York and produced by Billy Anderson. Successive releases included a brace of split EPs, shared with CONVERGE, another Hydra Head 7" outing featuring BLACK SABBATH's 'Cornucopia', and RUPTURE.
In 1997 Hoak teamed up with CORROSION OF CONFORMITY's Mike Dean to record a project album under the band name of NINE FINGER.
BRUTAL TRUTH made an appearance in a porn movie 'Studio X' in 1997. The band played two songs live and even took a part in acting although not in some of the more 'animated' scenes. Lilker took time out to ressurect S.O.D. as the original line-up toured America one last time.
The September 1997 album 'Sounds Of The Animal Kingdom', recorded that June at Baby Monster Studios in New York, broke BRUTAL TRUTH into fresh audiences and includes a somewhat unlikely cover of jazz maestro SUN RA's 'It's After The End Of The World'. Featured as guest vocalist on the track 'Postulate Then Liberate' would be EXIT 13's Bill Yurkiewicz who also acted as producer. The Japanese release added bonus cover versions in AGATHOCLES's 'Hippie Cult', NAUSEA's 'Cybergod' and BLACK SABBATH's 'Cornucopia'.
BRUTAL TRUTH undertook a demanding 90 date tour of North America to wind up 1997 on a touring package combining CANNIBAL CORPSE, IMMOLATION and OPRESSOR.
Despite steady progress and increased sales BRUTAL TRUTH split following completion of an Australian tour in September 1998. Lilker resumed activity with S.O.D. for their 'Bigger Than The Devil' album, the bassist also operating Black Metal band HEMLOCK as a side endeavour. Yet another venture found Lilker assembling THE RAVENOUS in 2000 for the 'Assembled In Blasphemy' album. Included were NECROPHAGIA's Killjoy and Chris Reifert of AUTOPSY.
Hoak re-emerged in 2000 with his subtly titled new band TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION. Meantime, BRUTAL TRUTH received a posthumous honour from The Guinness world book of records organisation, being awarded the world recognised title for "Shortest Music Video Ever" for their 1994 'Collateral Damage' promotional clip, involving 48 still images blurred in rapid succession for a duration of 2.18 seconds. Lilker surprisingly announced the reformation of the classic NUCLEAR ASSAULT line-up for an appearance at the 2002 'Wacken Open Air' Metal festival in Germany. Kevin Sharp made waves in late 2003 with his induction into the Grind 'supergroup' VENOMOUS CONCEPT, this outfit seeing the guitarist partnered with the illustrious underground Metal veterans guitarist Buzz Osbourne of MELVINS and FANTOMAS repute and the NAPALM DEATH rhythm section of bassist Shane Embury and drummer Danny Herrera.
Lilker would be in the driving seat for OVERLORD EXTERMINATOR in early 2004, a Black Metal combo featuring Adam Bonacci from WITHERED EARTH on vocals and COMMIT SUICIDE's Lee on bass guitar. This band's presence would be first marked by internet demos posted in February. That same Autumn the bassist forged CRUCIFIST, a Death / Black Metal band featuring singer Ron Blackwell, ORODRUIN and NIGHT CONQUERS DAY guitarist John Gallo with Mike Waske of ORODRUIN on drums.
BRUTAL TRUTH reunited in May 2006 in order to record a version of 'Sister Fucker' for an EYEHATEGOD benefit album, 'For The Sick - A Tribute To Eyehategod', released on Emetic Records. In September and October Lilker temped for SOULFLY's North American dates after regular bassist Bobby Burns suffered a mild stroke.
2007 BRUTAL TRUTH concerts were announced for the UK in February and Japan during March as part of the 'Extreme The Dojo V. 17' festivals.
The band returned with the album 'Evolution Through Revolution' scheduled for a 14th April 2009 North American release via Relapse Records. The album was recorded at Watchman Studios in Lockport, New York with engineer Doug White. BRUTAL TRUTH released its first ever DVD, entitled 'For the Ugly and Unwanted - This is Grindcore', in Europe on 22nd June via Season of Mist. The disc contained a full show, shot with five cameras, at the 'Obscene Extreme' festival 2007 in Czech Republic and four more full shows from the 'Sounds of the Animal Kindgom' world tour.
