Biography

Anti-Christian Metal band IMMOLATION was created in Yonkers, New York during February 1986 by frontman Ross Dolan, drummer Neal Boback and two erstwhile RIGOR MORTIS members, guitarists Robert Vigna and Thomas Wilkinson. Two demos, in July 1988 and June 1989, ensued prior to the July 1991 'Dawn Of Possession' album and the recruitment of drummer Craig Smilowski. These tracks had been constructed under the guidance of Harris Johns at Musiclab Studios in Berlin for Roadrunner Records. 'Dawn Of Possession' quickly found appreciation on a crowded market due in main to its convoluted and writhing unorthodoxy, pinch harmonics, atonal riffing and abundance of minor keys forming up a disturbing avalanche of unpredictability.

In January 1995 Repulse Records collected together the band's earlier demos, RIGOR MORTIS sessions, plus live tapes from New Rochelle, New York in December 1988 and Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania in June 1989, for release as the 'Stepping On Angels...Before Dawn' compilation. IMMOLATION, switching labels to Metal Blade, issued the February 1996 'Here In After' album. Former FALLEN CHRIST and DISASSOCIATE drummer Alex Hernández joined upon completion of the 'Here In After' sessions. Touring saw shows in Europe with CANNIBAL CORPSE.

In July 1998 the group entered Millbrook Sound Studios to forge 'Failures For Gods' with producer Paul Orofino, Metal Blade releasing this set a full year later. An exercise is unabashed, near indecipherable technicality, the album's subtleties were regretfully lost in a muddy mix.

IMMOLATION toured America in 2000 sharing billing with SIX FEET UNDER. Fourth album 'Close To A World Below' slunk out in November, rectifying many of the sound quality problems of its predecessor.

John McEntee of INCANTATION deputized for Vigna on later tours. With Vigna returning to action former ANGEL CORPSE man Bill Taylor would take over from Wilkinson in 2001.

Touring in Europe during May found IMMOLATION as headliners over DERANGED, DESTROYER 666, DECAPITATED and SOUL DEMISE. The band signed to Olympic Records for North America and the French Listenable label for Europe to issue the October 2002 'Unholy Cult' effort, again produced by Paul Orofino. The band would also schedule a European headlining tour in December in alliance with DERANGED, backed by Germany's Black Metal act MYSTIC CIRCLE and Sweden's INSISION. Further concerts witnessed the band forming part of an impressive cast for European 'Xmass Festivals' in December alongside SIX FEET UNDER, MARDUK, KATAKLYSM, DYING FETUS and HATE. Later gigs in Holland added veteran Thrashers EXODUS to the bill.

There would be no let up on the live front in 2003, IMMOLATION teaming up with CRADLE OF FILTH for European gigs throught March and April then GRAVE and GOATWHORE for US shows in June. Hernández was forced to drop off the US tour in June when he developed a hernia. He was replaced by Steve Shalaty who since become a permanent member.

During early 2004 Russ Dolan donated his services to a tribute album 'Within The Mind' assembled by guitarist JAMES MURPHY in honour of the late DEATH mentor Chuck Schuldiner. Former IMMOLATION drummer Alex Hernández joined Uruguayan Death Metal band REQUIEM AETURNAM for recording their album 'The Philosopher' in May 2004. Meantime, IMMOLATION themselves entered the studio in July with mainstay producer Paul Orofino for their seventh studio album, 'Harnessing Ruin', set for February 2005 release through Listenable Records and March in the USA via Olympic Recordings. The band collaborated with DEICIDE, WITH PASSION, SKINLESS and MISERY INDEX for US dates in May 2005.

North American touring resumed with EXODUS and CRYPTOPSY in April 2006. IMMOLATION cut new album tracks, dubbed 'Shadows Of The Light', with producer Paul Oforino at at Millbrook Sound Studios in New York during November. The band also put down material for an EP billed 'Hope And Horror', released in tandem with a live DVD filmed at at B.B. King's Blues Club in New York City. 'Shadows Of The Light' was delivered in May 2007 through Century Media.

SUFFOCATION teamed up with IMMOLATION and SKINLESS for a North American tour beginning late October.

For the band's eighth album IMMOLATION signed with Germany's Nuclear Blast label in June 2009.
