Biography
A New York Hard Rock band TALL STORIES emerged during the early 90's to huge critical acclaim from fans of the genre. Formed in 1987, vocalist Steve Augeri had walked into Manny's Music Store in New York with the intention of buying a new guitar and got talking with shop employee and guitarist Jack Morer. The singer was playing in a band called MAESTRO at the time with three Brazilian musicians. As his band mates left one by one, when Augeri found himself in need of a guitarist he called on Morer and the group eventually evolved into TALL STORIES after shedding then bassist Anthony Esposito, who joined LYNCH MOB. For a period Augeri would also be active with another act, entitled PREVIEW, but prioritised TALL STORIES as their career momentum grew.
Kevin Totoian, a former associate of EDGAR WINTER and who had played on a JOE COCKER album, was added to fill Esposito's shoes and a year and a half later parted company with their drummer. After a short period of time with drummer Michael Cartellone, who would subsequently end up in DAMN YANKEES, Tommy DeFaria rounded out the group. DeFaria had previously worked with ETTA JAMES, BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS and COMPANY OF WOLVES. Steve Augeri, incidentally, had a bunch of television and horror movie soundtrack work to his credit as well as a spell singing backing vocals (actually concealed behind the amp stack) with the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP.
After picking up management from FOREIGNER manager Bud Prager, TALL STORIES eventually signed a deal with Epic and released their Frank Filipetti produced debut product in 1991 to highly receptive press. Unfortunately the band failed to translate such media support into album sales despite an American club tour opening for MR. BIG.
Steve Augeri was invited to replace Danny Vaughn in the ranks of TYKETTO with whom the vocalist recorded 'Shine'. Augeri was subsequently involved in a high profile move to JOURNEY to replace STEVE PERRY.
With Augeri fronting the band, JOURNEY's much heralded 'Arrival' album finally emerged in late 2000 albeit only as a Japanese release. Both imports and internet downloads flooded the U.S. market. The American version which surfaced in April of 2001 being distinctly less ballad heavy. The EP 'Red 13' followed with the album 'Generations' issued in 2005. However, rocked by allegations that Augeri was failing on stage and being masked by tapes, JEFF SCOTT SOTO assumed lead singer duties on July 7th in Bristow, Virginia. An official explanation for the switch blamed a "Chronic throat infection".
Augeri duly re-activated TALL STORIES. For the comeback album 'Skyscraper', produced by guitarist Jack Morer, TALL STORIES hired guest drummers Rodney Howard, who contributed to "Stay" and "No Justice', the BLACK SABBATH, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT and RAINBOW credited Bobby Rondinelli on 'River Rise' and Nir Z on 'Original Sin', 'Eternal Light' and 'Pictures Of Summer'.
