Montevideo's REQUIEM AETERNAM was conceived during September of 1995, citing an inaugural line up of latter day OPETH personnel vocalist / bassist Marti­n Méndez and drummer Martin López with guitarists Pablo Magallanes and José Romero, the latter a former member of INNER SANCTUM. López also had prior membership of AMON AMARTH. This formation cut the demo 'Emergent From Something Inexplicable'.

Both Méndez and López joined the high profile Progressive Death Metal band OPETH for their landmark 'My Arms, Your Hearse' album in 1997. Altering the band line up substantially, REQUIEM AETERNAM cut down to a trio comprising Romero, also handling lead vocals, and new draftees Marcelo Aguilar on bass and drummer Fabián Redondo for recording of the EP 'Eternally Dying' for Death Row Productions. REQUIEM AETERNUM toured Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil to promote this offering. In 2000 Gonzalo Perez took over the bass role before the band went into stasis.

Romero took time out to write the philosophical book 'Escritos Prohibidos'. Publishing this tome in April of 2002. REQUIEM AETURNUM would be reconstituted in 2003, Romero pulling in ANTE LUCEM bassist Maciej Kupiszewski to help found a new version of the band. The band shifted shape once again in early 2004 as the FALLEN CHRIST, DISASSOCIATE and IMMOLATION credited Alex Hernandez enrolled on drums for a new album 'The Philosopher', being recorded at Big Blue Meenie Studios in New Jersey, USA during May. The album would be released on 1st December through ICorp in the USA and Canada, then on the 15th by Rawforce Productions in South America, except in Argentina where the license went to Orion Entertainment.

The group recorded the conceptual 'Destiny-Man' album throughout 2008 and 2009, a body of work inspired by a book by Jose Romero Sum and classical composers including Takemitsu, Beethoven, Mozart, Piazzolla, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Chopin, Paganini and Villa-Lobos.
