CAPTAIN BEYOND

Biography

Hard Rock 'Supergroup' founded by ex-DEEP PURPLE vocalist Rod Evans in 1971. Joining him were former IRON BUTTERFLY men guitarist Larry 'Rhino' Rheinhart and bassist Lee Dorman. Drums were handled by former NOAH'S ARK and JOHNNY WINTER BAND member Bobby Caldwell. Following the well received debut Caldwell departed to join DERRINGER and was replaced by Marty Rodriguez. CAPTAIN BEYOND also augmented their sound with the addition of erstwhile BOZ SCAGGS and PANDEMONIUM pianist Reese Wynans and percussionist Guille Garcia for 1973's Sci-Fi infused 'Sufficiently Breathless'.

Caldwell returned to the band mid way through the resulting American tour but the band folded in 1974. The drummer returned to JOHNNY WINTER to complete his 'Saints And Sinners' album before forming ARMAGEDDON, the Hard Rock band led by former YARDBIRDS singer Keith Relf.

Evans quit in 1976 but the band persevered by drafting ex-TRUK and HUNGER frontman Willy Daffern. A third and final album ensued 'Dawn Explosion' which found Caldwell back on the drum stool. Daffern would later join Tim Bogert's PIPEDREAM and GARY MOORE's G FORCE. Latterly the singer, known most commonly as Willy Dee, fronts ZOOM LENZ and has contributed to a CAPTAIN BEYOND tribute album.

CAPTAIN BEYOND meanwhile resumed action in 1979 touring America with a line-up of Dorman, Caldwell, vocalist Robb Hanshaw and guitarist Randy. Caldwell, Hanshaw and Dorman also gigged as IRON BUTTERFLY the same year. Hanshaw quit after the tour collapsed to join GREY STAR, the band fronted by RUBY STARR.

Caldwell attempted a short-lived stab at reforming ARMAGEDDON in 1985. CAPTAIN BEYOND reformed in 1999. Rheinhart and Caldwell were joined by former SPIRAL STARECASE vocalist Jimi Interval, ex-SAD BIRD, SUBURBAN STRATEGY and WHITE SUMMER keyboard player Dan Frye and Jeff Artabasy on bass.

This line-up cut a four track CD and resumed touring activities including a date at the Karlshamm festival in Sweden. In 1999 Lee Dorman toured Germany as part of the renewed IRON BUTTERFLY.

The 2000 tribute album included contributions from Doomsters PENTAGRAM and Swedes LOTUS and LOCOMOTIVE BREATH. It was announced in mid 2001 that Kyle Rhoads was CAPTAIN BEYOND's new vocalist. Noted ex-DOKKEN guitarist GEORGE LYNCH paid homage in 2004 with the inclusion of his cover take on 'Dancing Madly Backwards' included on his 'Furious George' album.

The band had their track 'Fantasy' covered on OVERDRIVE and LOCOMOTIVE BREATH guitarist Janne Stark's November 2006 MOUNTAIN OF POWER tribute collection.
